Has been off the track for 10 months before jumping poorly here last month and being pulled up in a handicap chase. 5lb higher than when winning this race last year, so will need to find something extra and connections now turn to headgear in the hope of eeking out a bit more. Very competitive if firing today.

Well placed to win five of his 12 starts and continued his improvement when scoring at Perth (2m, good) last month. Raised 4lb for that and handles good to soft, so looks a likely player.

Won a novices' hurdle at 33/1 here last year, but has proved that was no fluke with a further five successes, the last two being recently on the Flat. Even so, didn't convince at this level on his last hurdles outing and 10lb claimer up to try to help bridge the gap. Handles cut and could emerge as the one to beat.

3lb higher than when scoring at Ayr (2m, good to soft) at Ayr in October, but disappointed when joint-favourite over C&D last month and has a little to prove after that and also from today's mark.

Had been chasing in recent times with Nicky Henderson, winning one at Huntingdon last year. Although he couldn't add to that, he has run some creditable races in defeat and new trainer now has a go with him and switches him back to hurdles from what could be a handy mark. Interesting with champion up.

Both hurdles successes have been on good to soft and ran well from today's mark at Stratford last time when making the frame. A repeat would again give him claims of making the frame or perhaps better.

Has a pair of C&D wins to his name (both at the August Bank Holiday meeting), one of the on good to soft. 4lb higher than the last of those and that includes the rise of 1lb for his latest decent effort at Hexham. Needs to find a bit extra to add a third C&D success.

Hexham specialist who scored there last month (2m4f, good) from 5lb lower. Handles cut in the ground and is versatile regarding trip, but she has never won from a mark this high and in a competitive event others are preferred at this venue.

Was a 10L C&D winner from 2lb ower in 2015, but has managed to add just one more success to his CV. That was last time out at Uttoxeter (2m5½f, good to soft) from 7lb lower. Up in grade here and needs to be at his best to take home some prize money.

Back to form this year with two wins, the latest being last time out over C&D (good to soft) from a 4lb lower mark. Has won from higher in the past and, given that the front pair were 6L clear in that recent win, he looks to have a squeak again under his 10lb claimer despite the step up in grade.

Former Grade Two winner and Grade One runner- up in Ireland, but that was some years ago. However, showed he can still win a race when doing so at Stratford last time (good to firm) by 9L. Carries 7lb penalty for that in a better race, but he was impressive there and he goes well with cut in the ground.

Forecasts

Sailors Warn (7/2), Caius Marcius (4/1), Restraint of Trade (5/1), Tonto's Spirit (7/1), Altruism (7/1), Lough Kent (10/1), Captain Brown (10/1), Milrow (10/1), Nicolas Chauvin (16/1), Beyondtemptation (33/1), Space Ship (33/1)

Verdict

Last year's winner Altruism is capable of going close again if putting his best hoof forward, while Sailors Warn impressed last time and is feared from bottom weight under a penalty. However, CAIUS MARCIUS is unexposed and well regarded by his patient trainer, and he is given the vote to follow-up his recent Perth win. Milrow is another to consider, while Lough Kent might be good enough to have say and looks next best of the Moffatt-trained runners.
  1. Caius Marcius
  2. Sailors Warn
  3. Altruism
