Has shown some useful form over hurdles and looks like matching that over fences with his two efforts (one win) have proved very creditable so far. Win came on his debut over fences at Worcester and although he failed to follow up off a 2lb higher mark last time he still ran with promise in a match and holds solid chance of getting back on the winning trail here.
A light of former years (previous Cheltenham Festival winner) he has shaped relatively well for this yard of late probably looking a little better than his final placings suggest. In fact he travelled better than most last time (without his usual headgear) when well beaten at Aintree but made his effort far too early and paid for those exertions. Potentially well handicapped now (Festival win came off 140) and would be of interest if ridden with a little more restraint.
Fairly useful chaser although his jumping can be a little disorganized and he does make mistakes at vitals stages of the contest. Put a couple of poor runs behind him when winning a small-field handicap at Worcester on his penultimate start off a 2lb lower mark. Struggled to match that form last time out when second of three and has never won off a mark this high.
Winning hurdler when with Noel Meade in Ireland but has failed to impress for the same yard over fences (0/6) and now makes his debut for a new stable. His chasing exploits so far have been underwhelming and he would need to make definite improvement to get involved here and is best watched for now given his previous chasing efforts.
Both his chasing wins have come over this C&D but this looks a harder contest than he usually plies his trade in and he'll struggle to follow up his win here last time. Made all on that occasion but up 5lb for that win to a mark of 105 may well prove to be too tough a test.
In good form over the last couple of months in weak events and generally goes well at this course and has won twice here with both victories coming over further (2m4f). Of late though his best form has been shown around Fakenham and although his consistency is hard to fault he is a modest operator overall and he meets some better quality rivals here and will face competition for the lead.
Forecasts
Stynes (3/1), Red Giant (7/2), Cape Caster (9/2), Stormbay Bomber (9/2), Solar Impulse (11/2), That's The Deal (7/1)
Both Stormbay Bomber and That’s The Deal have been in decent form of late and can operate around here but neither are what you would call 0-120 horses and they may just get outclassed here although they should at least provide a good pace in the race. Stynes appears to have taken to chasing well and is very much respected as is Cape Caster although he does make mistakes and those could prove costly here. SOLAR IMPULSE isn’t the horse that he was but the handicapper is giving him a real chance and given that he is much better than his placing last time out he’s given a chance to make amends here in a race that should be run to suit.
- Solar Impulse
- Stynes
- Cape Caster
