Veteran, but has been a reliable campaigner for a number of years, and this five time winner has also been regularly placed in a 49 race career. That said; he's been slow to come to hand this term, but has dropped 5lb in three starts since mid April and this trip and forecast ground conditions tend to bring out the best in him.

C&D winner from a 5lb lower mark in September 2016, which was her third success in four starts (also a two time scorer at Newmarket). Entitled to have needed her seasonal reappearance at Doncaster in early May, but the handicapper might well have her measure again for now.

Ran a sound race on Derby Day when third of 16 to Reputation and Naggers in a competitive Class 2 handicap (6F good). This contest is a shade weaker (Class 3) and a mark of 86 looks a reasonable one, so holds every chance despite not having won since September 2015.

Kept busy lately, with her trainer reporting that she is in-foal after winning at Newcastle earlier in the month. Taken out at Carlisle last week (soft ground), and this is her last chance to race in her 120 day in-foal racing 'window', but this is a stronger contest than at Newcastle and she's 2lb higher.

Made all to register a shock 33/1 win at Windsor last month (6F good), but hasn't been able to back that up since despite differing riding tactics (at Goodwood). Possibly found the ground less suitable at Chepstow latest, but others make more appeal.

Yet to really threaten to break his handicap duck, but all signs indicate that this 6F trip is his optimum. Ran well over 6F when third to Robero on his penultimate start at Ascot in early May and not ruled out on that showing despite a 3lb higher mark.

Tends to save his best form for Haydock Park, and likes to get his toe into a soft surface. Beat off all bar the decisive winner Adam's Ale at that Lancashire venue last Thursday, but this drying ground isn't ideal.

Won twice over 6F (good) at Pontefract from similar marks (79 and 83) over the course of the past couple of years, and solid enough for the bulk of last month with form figures reading 2,3,2. Excuses for his latest run at Ripon, slowly away and hampered, so likely to be there or thereabouts with a smoother passage.

Stunningly consistent form figures since switched from Charlie Appleby to this trainer for £10,000 in November 2015 - 2,2,1,3,2,1,2. Has risen 7lb in the handicap over that period to a mark of 80, but like the majority of this trainers stock is in good order at present and has demonstrated an affinity for this C&D.

Forecasts

George Bowen (2/1), Magical Effect (3/1), Escalating (9/2), Syrian Pearl (8/1), War Whisper (8/1), Seeking Magic (12/1), Love Island (14/1), Rantan (14/1), Johnny Cavagin (16/1), Englishman (25/1)

Verdict

Escalating will be popular with punters after Sunday's course success (5F). He'd previously finished third to an in-foal Richard Whitaker trained mare Tumblewind at Pontefract late last month, and meets another today in the shape of cosy Newcastle winner Love Island. She has one final attempt at racing before becoming a Mum, but this is a stronger contest than the small field affair she won at Newcastle recently. Rantan ran well last week, but needs cut and Haydock to be deployed at maximum effect, so the vote goes to the increasingly well treated GEORGE BOWEN. Admittedly he's not won for quite a while, but his trainers horses are in excellent form and he ran a cracker in a Class 2 Handicap at Epsom on Derby Day.
