2lb higher today then when scoring over this trip at Newcastle in January and ran well from that same mark back at that venue since. Trip not a problem, nor are conditions, but his handicap mark appears to be the thing preventing him from winning at present.
Won an Epsom maiden (7f, good) in September but was well held on his first try in handicap company when last seen at Ripon (1m, good) later that month. Has since left Charlie Appleby for current yard and been dropped 1lb. Handles good to soft but yet to be tried on softer. Interesting if supported but may otherwise be best watched today.
Won his maiden here (6f, soft) in September and added to that with a win at Doncaster (heavy) over this trip last time. Front pair had a little in hand, but not enough to suggest that a 5lb rise is definitely within his compass. Nonetheless, he is unexposed, could improve and clearly likes the ground, so has to be taken seriously.
His sole success was recorded over this trip at Chester (good) in September and he has put in three sound efforts from four starts this season. Has it to prove on soft ground and that would definitely be a concern on pedigree, as both his sire and dam only raced on good or faster, but otherwise a 2lb drop should make him very competitive.
Won his Newbury maiden over this trip and on good to soft last September, though has not reproduced that effort in two starts this season. Drops 1lb going into this and is also back to this trip from 1m, so further progress not yet ruled out, though does have a bit to prove.
Unable to win a maiden, but scored on his handicap debut at Newcastle in September (6f, AW) from a mark of 72. Went close when upped 4lb and in trip to 7f at Goodwood on his only subsequent run in October. Comes here fresh, which is a slight concern given that he took three runs to get going last year and up another 4lb but improvement not ruled out.
Sole win came in a Lingfield maiden (6f, AW) on her second run last July when with William Haggas. Went close in a couple of 6f handicaps from a mark of 78 after that, though has so far raced only over 5f for this trainer. 1lb drop and now upped to what looks an ideal trip, she handles good to soft well enough and has each-way claims.
Won a Thirsk novices' contest on debut (6f, good) as a juvenile, but struggled with the handicapper's requests thereafter. 5L behind Mjjack at Doncaster on her return to the fray last month and looks in need of a further slide in the weights.
Just the two starts so far, a debut maiden win at Redcar (7f, good to firm) in April and then a 6½L seventh of 14 in a 0-95 handicap at York last time (7f, soft). Tries his hand at a lower level here back on soft ground, so connections don't seem to see that as a problem, and may be able to make more of an impact.
Forecasts
Warrior's Spirit (3/1), Mjjack (10/3), Sir Reginald Brown (9/2), Arc Royal (7/1), Lady In Question (8/1), Letmestopyouthere (10/1), Fareeq (12/1), Jumping Around (16/1), Maldonado (40/1)
Maldonado is one to keep an eye on in the market here, but without confidence in that respect he is probably one to watch this time. Warrior's Spirit could do better back over 7f, while Fareeq has the ability, though took a while to come to hand last season. MJJACK is already proved on soft ground at this venue and is unexposed and capable of winning it, while Arc Royal looks a danger, though the ground is a definite cause for concern.
- Mjjack
- Warrior's Spirit
- Fareeq
