Both his dam's wins came on good to soft ground, one over this trip and he showed that he handles cut when third at Thirsk (1m4f, soft) in his only turf start so far on the Flat. Gets in here from a workable mark for this handicap debut and could go very well.

Won a Catterick maiden over this trip (good to firm) a couple of years ago but after a good handicap debut things have rather fallen apart and he is now 14lb lower than his initial rating. Hood tried for the first time today, but needs that to have a significant effect to be winning given recent evidence.

Twice made the frame from a mark of 64 in handicaps last season, including over C&D (good) in June. Gelded and changed yards since then and was last of six, beaten 37L on his Ayr reappearance from 2lb higher than today. Will need to come on a fair bit for that and prove himself with cut, but not ruled out.

Won a 7f Thirsk maiden on debut in 2015, but has had only five runs since then and only once been competitive, which came on soft ground at Goodwood on her handicap debut. 8lb lower today but recent efforts none too encouraging and others preferred.

Yet to make the frame from four starts and usually sent off at fancy prices. Beaten over 7L from 2lb higher over this trip at Wolverhampton last time and hard to fancy again here.

1-18 on the Flat, that win coming 13 months ago at Bath (1m2f, good) from a mark of 55 when with Mick Channon. Some encouragement in his Pontefract run in April (1m, good) from 1lb higher than today and hard to see from his pedigree that this longer trip is ideal.

Sole success came in a heavy ground Leicester handicap over this trip almost a year ago. Has been back to the well on six further occasions and only once threatened a repeat at Southwell (1m3f, AW) in April, which was from today's mark. With plenty of rain around, he looks weighted to go close again.

Forecasts

Hurricane Hollow (6/4), Young Tom (4/1), Marmion (5/1), Callaghan (7/1), Rockliffe (17/2), Gold Merlion (12/1), Hayward Field (16/1)

Verdict

Young Tom has conditions to suit and it would be no surprise to see him make a success of things again from this mark, while Hayward Field may well go much better now than on his seasonal return and is not ruled out. However, HURRICANE HOLLOW is the one with the most untapped potential and although he has to shoulder topweight on his handicap debut, he handles these conditions and he might be one to catch first time in this sphere.
  1. Hurricane Hollow
  2. Young Tom
  3. Hayward Field
