The only one in this field making his handicap debut having shown fair form on the Flat (rated 85 and a winner over 1m2f) and looks as he may well come into his own over hurdles now. Run over this C&D the last twice and did well to get within 6L of favorite Enzani last time out in a novice hurdle.
Rare runner at the track for this Southern-based yard (run three here this afternoon) and this one comes here seeking a hat-trick having won a novice at Stratford and a handicap on debut at Warwick (off 110). Had been disappointing prior to his novice win and that victory came a little out of the blue but he made good progress to win on his next start in a deeper race (travelled well) and looks sure to give another good account off a 5lb higher mark.
Brought back to hurdles this spring (won two chases both at Fakenham in 2016) he took advantage of a lower hurdles mark to win at Kempton Park last time out off a mark of 107 having shaped well at Stratford the time before over a slightly longer trip. Beat some unexposed/progressive types on his last start and he's only up 3lb for that win and will appreciate the bare 2m trip here.
Now with his fifth trainer having started life with Andre Fabre in France and been through a few other good yards. Not shown much on the Flat or over hurdles of late with the one shining light being his second in a Wetherby seller in April when given a enterprising ride but hardly the most convincing or consistent of individuals.
Winner of two handicaps here last year both over further (2m4f) when he was in far better form those wins coming off marks of 90 and 101. Has struggled since then though but has drifted back to below his last winning mark as the saving grace here but others are in much better form.
Inconsistent sort with just one hurdles win to his name and is usually seen over fences these days having not run in this sphere since October 2015 off a mark of 102 at Kelso. Goes well at Sedgefield (all of his four wins have come there) and he sprang back to form over fences there on his penultimate start after an eight month break seeing the race out better than usual although he was up against another weak finisher in Vodka Wells. Failed to back that effort up (no real surprise) at Cartmel recently (easy to back) and comes here under a cloud.

An interesting little handicap hurdle with a couple coming in here off wins last time out and one had some smart Flat form and now goes handicapping for the first time over hurdles. It may well be that the handicap debutante MR GRUMPY can take this having shown up well last time out here and an opening mark of 115 doesn’t look that harsh. Both Attest and Salto Chisco won last time out and face small rises in their marks for those runs but both should be competitive with both of their wins coming in competitive races and looking to be solid form. Apart from those three the rest look a modest bunch who would have to find plenty on current form to win this.
- Mr Grumpy
- Salto Chisco
- Attest
