Anticipated improvement for switch of yards failed to materialise in his previous outing at Chepstow (2m, good to firm), where he was beaten a fair way from home. Kept to maiden company, it is hard to rule out improvement yet and once again a market check is suggested.
Showed improved form on his debut for this yard at Kelso (2m2f, soft) last month and had a chance of winning before hanging left on the run-in and finishing third. No reason why he can't continue to progress and take a hand in proceedings today.

Carlisle bumper winner (2m1f, good) just over a year ago and, after falling on his hurdling debut at Market Rasen, he finished a 3¼L third to subsequent Grade One winner Pingshou at Cheltenham (2m1f, good) when last seen in December. That is clearly smart form and he looks the one to beat.

Has not won since Chester (1m2½f, good) on the Flat a year ago. Has had four runs over hurdles, with the best couple being on soft ground at around 2m in December and January. Well beaten on handicap debut at Warwick last time and goes into this after a 6lb drop. Capable but needs to improve to win this.

Runner-up in an Ascot bumper (1m7½f, good) in December and ran to a similar level of form in Listed company over the same C&D (good to soft) next time. Possible that heavy ground was against him at Wincanton last time. Makes his hurdles debut here and is a full-brother to 2m1f/2m4f hurdle winner Derintoher Yank.
Showed improved form on is most recent start at Stratford (2m2½f, good), though perhaps did not help his cause by racing keenly. Half-brother to a French 2m hurdle winner and out of a French 2m1f hurdle winner, so there is some optimism that she can make further progress.

Moderate form in a Chepstow bumper (2m, soft) and at Carlislfe (2m3½f, good) on her hurdling debut. Some improvement on that when stepped up to 2m5½f at Newton Abbot (good) last time, but now drops back to the minimum and into maiden company. Market check advised.

Forecasts

Lieutenant Gruber (1/4), Newera (6/1), Jardin Des Plantes (12/1), Present Destiny (14/1), Derrydoon (25/1), Danseur Du Large (33/1), Njorls Saga (80/1)

Verdict

LIEUTENANT GRUBER was beaten just over three lengths by subsequent Grade One Aintree Top Novices' Hurdle winner Pingshou when the pair met at Cheltenham in December and that is outstanding form to bring into this contest. Dan Skelton looks to have found a good opportunity for him to break his duck over hurdles. Jardin Des Plantes and Danseur Du Large looks like the other pair most likely to progress and can fight out the minors, while Present Destiny is an interesting newcomer.
  1. Lieutenant Gruber
  2. Jardin Des Plantes
  3. Danseur Du Large
