Made a good start to life over fences winning at Ludlow and Fontwell at short prices and against single-figure fields. Rather found out in better company after that at Cheltenham and ran a fairly flat race last time out at Sandown Park. This race wouldn't be as competitive as his last two but there is still some work to do off this mark.
One of two that the stable run in this he's been a little hit and miss over fences so far but a better surface appears to suit him and he got back on track last time out beating just two rivals. Has only run in one handicap before over fences (tough assignment at Cheltenham) and based on his hurdles mark he's quite well weighted here with the Champion jockey taking the ride.
You only have to take a look at his overall CV to see what an awkward customer he is who really should have won more than he has if he put it all in at the finish. Given a very good ride by today's pilot to coax a win out of him at Leicester but has reverted to type twice since. Has the ability to win off this mark but his attitude often prevents him from going so and not one to trust.
Looked a progressive sort last season over hurdles and fences and won two handicaps over the larger obstacles back-to-back in December. Given a break after that he had a hurdles outing to blow the cobwebs away before running a good race last time out albeit he was unplaced (race not run to suit) and looks a danger here off a pound lower mark with the tongue-tie on for the first time.
Took a while for the penny to drop over fences for this multiple winning hurdler but he finally got off the mark at Musselburgh in March (better ground may have helped). Has run no more than respectably in his last two starts although he wasn't seen to best effect on his last start (hampered early on and got too far back). Should be effective off this mark although the others do have a little more class.
A winning hurdler who had shown some aptitude for fences until last time out when he ran poorly at Ffos Las with some very scrappy jumping not helping at all. Needs to jump much better here to take a hand and may find this a little too tough even off a feasible mark.
Forecasts
Hammersly Lake (3/1), Kilcrea Vale (3/1), Poker School (7/2), Nansaroy (5/1), Champagne At Tara (15/2), Ash Park (8/1)
Nicky Henderson launches a dual pronged attack here with Kilcrea Vale and Hammersly Lake although neither have totally convinced of late over fences. Both Ash Park and Nansaroy have something to prove in this pay grade while it’s hard to be enthusiastic over the finishing effort of Champagne At Tara. All of that leads to POKER SCHOOL being the one to side with here off an acceptable mark in a race that should be run to suit.
- Poker School
- Kilcrea Vale
- Hammersly Lake
