Winner for John Gosden last year in a 6f Doncaster maiden and looked rather unlucky in a few big field handicaps after that. Showed improved form to score on his debut for this yard over 5f at Beverley and ran well under a penalty at Pontefract when turned out quickly over the same trip. Should be able to be competitive here off a mark of 96 as he bids to regain the winning thread.
Last won at York in 2015 over 5f on soft going but isn't the most consistent and so its proved as despite the odd good run since he has been disappointing on his last two starts. Comes back from a break here and may be better off a break but hard to totally rely on him.
Lightly raced (just five runs) since winning Turkish Group 3 in 2015 over 6f when with Richard Hannon. Fairly highly tried after that and only had two runs for this yard who know what to do with sprinters and it will be interesting to see what they can do with him this year.
Ran a good race last time out at Newmarket over 5f when not fancied at all in the market for a yard that has yet to fire this year so far. Looks on a fair mark and acts well on quick ground with the form of the Newmarket race looking strong (both the winner, second and sixth won next time out).
Broke a long losing spell when winning at Windsor on his penultimate start and despite better form in the past (has won at Group level) handicaps look more his level now. Duly ran well below form last time out and will need to bounce back here.
5f really does look to be his trip and he's done all his winning over this trip although he may well be a better horse on the AW. Headgear returns this time after a disappointing turf return at Ripon (without headgear) after a break and may find one or two in better form here.
Forecasts
Edward Lewis (9/4), Orvar (3/1), Oh So Sassy (9/2), Distant Past (6/1), Stepper Point (6/1), Union Rose (8/1)
A small field but still plenty of interest and given Robert Cowell’s record with sprinters Orvar is an interesting sort here and he looks one that the stable could have some fun with. Edward Lewis is worth another chance although ultimately he looks the sort who should have won more races than he has. With Union Rose and Stepper Point rather inconsistent a tentative vote is given to OH SO SASSY who comes from a race at Newmarket that is working out well and given that she usually needs a run that form looks even better.
- Oh So Sassy
- Edward Lewis
- Orvar
