Ran out a comfortable winner of a C&D handicap in June 2016 on his last start on synthetics, and progressed quickly thereafter winning three more times on turf (all over 2m at Beverley, Newmarket and Goodwood). His subsequent third placed effort in the Group 2 Doncaster Cup represents strong form at this level, and he returns fresh from a winter break following his midfield finish in the Cesarewitch.

Beaten 3½L into fourth by Wild Hacked in a valuable Class 2 handicap at Newcastle on Good Friday, but that probably represented a career best effort to date. This three time winner on turf (all over 1m4f at Salisbury, Haydock and Leicester) has a little to find with a couple of tonight's rivals at these weights.

Finished well down the field in the 2016 Ebor and has only a 1m4f Lingfield maiden success (November 2015) on his CV so far. Not helped by racing wide at Newcastle (but well behind Fabricate) on his latest outing, with considerable improvement required here.

Well travelled ex-Italian racer, and a twelve time winner in that country at trips upto 1m4f. Performed consistently well at the Dubai Carnival earlier this year, and no disgrace in regularly being beaten by Prize Money. Holds an entry in the Group 2 Yorkshire Cup next week, but needs to improve upon his recent Newbury John Porter seventh of eight if to tackle that kind of company. Obvious contender tonight on his AW debut.

Hampered in the Idaho incident when sixth of nine in the 2016 St Leger at Doncaster on his first attempt at this sort of trip, and perhaps reason to believe that was aiming a shade too high. However he was placed at Royal Ascot (King George V), the Newmarket July Festival (Group 2 Bahrain Trophy) and also fourth of six in the Great Voltigeur at York in August, so this race is definitely a fair starting point this term.

Forecasts

St Michel (15/8), Fabricate (9/4), Dylan Mouth (10/3), Harrison (5/1), Ballynanty (14/1)

Verdict

Dylan Mouth was in good form on turf during the winter at Meydan, and is probably the pick of the weights in this conditions race. However, he is yet to race beyond 1m4f and this contest is also his AW debut, so he has a few minor questions to answer with the 'sunshine effect' also probably now wearing off. Therefore, despite returning from a winter break, preference is for C&D handicap winner ST MICHEL. His trainer has demonstrated recently that his horses are coming to hand, and this four-year-old colt did nothing but improve during the second half of last season, with his Doncaster Cup third to Sheikhzayedroad rock-solid form.
  1. St Michel
  2. Dylan Mouth
  3. Harrison
