Fair record over fences, he won a 2m5f handicap off a mark of 105 on debut for this trainer at Fairyhouse in November in really good style and scored again the following month off an 11lb higher mark. Pulled up last month at Fairyhouse, the handicapper may have him held for now.

Age: 8|  Weight: 11-6| J: C Brassil(5)| T: M F Morris| OR:  119
10/1
Won 2m novice chase at Tramore on New Year's Day and close second upped in trip at Fairyhouse the same month in follow-up attempt. Very much struggled in both handicaps since and goes up markedly in trip now having been given 3lb back.
3
Horse silk
Holeinthewall Barp9
Age: 9|  Weight: 11-4| J: Jack Kennedy| T: G Elliott| OR:  117
11/2
Modest record of three wins in 50 outings under rules, he won a 2m chase at Down Royal in January as he pleased before falling when seeking a quick follow up over a longer trip at Fairyhouse. Disappointing over hurdles since, he'll have his stamina tested here and doesn't appeal as one to trust for any consistency of effort.

Clontarft22
Age: 8|  Weight: 11-3| J: Robbie Colgan| T: D A McLoughlin| OR:  116
6/1
Won first time over fences at Fairyhouse in January over 2m5f on soft ground, since run fair race in decent novice company back at the same track over slightly reduced trip. Has won over 3m on forecast ground as a hurdler and rates as a contender for this.

Age: 9|  Weight: 11-3| J: Sean Flanagan| T: N Meade| OR:  116

Ran credible race in the Topham at Aintree last month before finishing remote third in Ladies National at Fairyhouse over 2m6f. First-time cheekpieces are added now and he goes on the shortlist.

Stonehall Jack17
Age: 8|  Weight: 11-2| J: D E Splaine| T: D E Fitzgerald| OR:  115
6/1
A consistent sort over fences, he probably doesn't win as often as he might (2/27, with ten placed finishes). Scored last month at Tramore (2m5f, yielding, good in places) either side of runner-up finishes at Thurles and Kilbeggan over 2m4f. Stamina for this extra distance is no concern though he'll need to defy career-high mark to collect.

Motown Bobt29
Age: 7|  Weight: 11-1| J: R M Power| T: H De Bromhead| OR:  114
9/2
Yet to win in six starts over fences, though has run with credit at times. Bit to find with Stonehall Jack on last month's Tramore run despite the swing in terms and will also have to prove stamina for this test.

Carole Rose10
Age: 7|  Weight: 10-11| J: M A Enright| T: L Casey| OR:  110
7/1
Winner of a mares contest over 2m3f at Limerick on testing ground last month before acquitting herself well in competitive Punchestown handicap over 2m5f, she's entitled to be competitive in this line-up.
9
Horse silk
Aranhill Rascalt331
Age: 9|  Weight: 9-10| J: A Ring(3)| T: S J Mahon| OR:  86
20/1
Remains a maiden after 19 starts under rules, was pulled up over this sort of trip at Limerick in June when last spotted. Not getting any favours at these weights attempting to defy 331-day absence.

Forecasts

Thomond (4/1), Motown Bob (9/2), Holeinthewall Bar (11/2), Stonehall Jack (6/1), Clontarf (6/1), Carole Rose (7/1), Catalaunian Fields (10/1), Smadynium (12/1), Aranhill Rascal (20/1)

Verdict

CLONTARF has appeared a nice prospect in two novice runs over fences so far, winning on debut at Fairyhouse in January and there could be more to come from him. This trip and forecast ground do not hold any fears, something that can't be said for a few in this line-up, and so he looks one of the safer options. Stonehall Jack doesn't win as often as desired and while he's in good heart lately, facing a career-high mark is a negative. Smadynium should give his running but might he in the grasp of the handicapper while Holeinthewall Bar would be a threat if he's in the mood. In first-time cheekpieces, Thomond's run in the Topham ensures he is also respected.
  1. Clontarf
  2. Stonehall Jack
  3. Smadynium
