Finished 12L second in this race in 2016 to Discoverie, but this veteran has been in fine shape since the turn of this year, winning three times, including over C&D in February. Whilst he can run in snatches, he's only 2lb higher than when winning by 33L at Southwell last month so should run his race at a track which he clearly handles well.

Ran well when third on his penultimate start at Kelso last month, and also held every chance upsides Honourable Gent when awkward at the second last at Wetherby (saddle slipped) and quickly pulled up. Leading rider in the North takes over in the saddle from injured regular rider Tony Kelly.

Old timer who enjoys racing prominently and can be feared at this track when getting loose off the front end as he demonstrated when winning over C&D in August 2015. Off since October 2016, so might just need this return to action.

Blinkers applied for the first time as his trainer attempts to arrest his steady decline (dropped 17lb since November 2016). Twice a winner in the past for Dan Skelton, this looks very much a make or break outing with regards his future prospects.

In great form over the past six to eight weeks, and notched a hurdles double under Stan Sheppard at Stratford and Exeter (2m to 2m2f). However is zero from five over fences during his career (fell at Huntingdon in November 2016), but is worth another try over the larger obstacles now back in form.

Loves this track with career form figures here reading: 1,3,0,2,1,7,6,4,2,2,1,2. However, has been absent since September 2016 and is yet to win for this yard in eleven attempts.

Forecasts

Vodka Wells (11/8), Chestnut Ben (4/1), Boss Des Mottes (9/2), Gambol (11/2), Toledo Gold (11/1), Muwalla (16/1)

Verdict

Plenty of question marks against the majority of these runners. Chestnut Ben should run another big race having appeared better than ever since the turn of the year despite reaching the ripe old age of twelve. Gambol has been in good shape over hurdles but returns to fences with an obvious point or two to prove, whilst Boss Des Mottes has to really prove he wants to race at all nowadays with the blinkers applied. VODKA WELLS was a promising sort as a novice chaser and ought to have really won more races than he has. He hasn't been with this yard for too long, and whilst he was possibly held when blundering at Wetherby recently, this combination of fast ground and an undulating track can suit this prominent racer if settled in nicely by Brian Hughes behind the habitual trail blazer Toledo Gold.
  1. Vodka Wells
  2. Chestnut Ben
  3. Muwalla
