7/4
A two time winner over hurdles in the spring of 2016 (Catterick and Ayr) and always promised to be the type to do better over fences. However, with his stable out of form, that progress was initially slow, but form figures of 24323 since New Year suggest he's on the right track towards breaking his fencing maiden status. Handles most ground conditions.

Clearly not been easy to handle after just 18 career starts, but has finished in the money regularly including when winning a novices' handicap chase at Perth in 2015. Didn't appear to get up the Towcester hill last month (last of three to Masterplan), with the suspicion being that he's better over 2m. On a fair mark.

Rated 115 over hurdles, but his fencing mark has plummeted to 100 after four rather sketchy attempts so far. From a stable in form, and worthy of market inspection, but needs to be able to reproduce the best of his hurdles efforts for Stuart Edmunds to take a hand.

C&D winner in February, but remains 9lb higher for that 12L success. His only other rules success came in a Newton Abbot maiden hurdle in July 2016, but we know that he handles a slick surface well, and the application of cheek-pieces could well resharpen his focus.

Age: 9|  Weight: 11-6| J: Daragh Bourke(5)| T: M A Barnes| OR:  105

Both career successes have come at Hexham (2m maiden hurdle in November 2015, and a 2m4f novices handicap chase in October 2016). Possibly given a pipe-opener over hurdles at that track recently and could be sharper now back over the larger obstacles and despite being 7lb higher than when winning in October should be on the premises.

Forecasts

Nine Altars (7/4), Banny's Lad (2/1), Quick Brew (7/2), Oscatara (17/2), Christmas Twenty (20/1)

Verdict

All five of these runners have some question marks against their names, but equally it's tough to definitively rule any of them out of contention in this race. Nine Altars was arguably a shade disappointing at Wetherby last month having previously appeared to be headed in the right direction over fences. Oscatara and Christmas Twenty are on reasonable marks, but doubts remains regarding stamina and fencing respectively. Quick Brew promises to do better now back over fences, but the vote goes to February C&D winner BANNY'S LAD, in the hope that the application of cheek-pieces and a faster racing surface will play to his strengths.
  1. Banny's Lad
  2. Oscatara
  3. Quick Brew
