Can often flatter to deceive and not the easiest to win with and has a barren 18 months plus on the win front. Didn't get the best of runs at Doncaster on his return (drawn wrong side) and looks as though he could do with some further help from the handicapper.

Was in good form in 2016 winning on four occasions over 6-7f the last of those wins coming over C&D. Likes to go from the front and well drawn to that end here and for all that he wears a variety of headgear is very genuine and game.

Not an easy one to win with and both his recent wins have come in the same York apprentices' race on both occasions ridden by today's pilot. Has won here over C&D in the past and can often travel well in his races and should come on for a recent outing at Southwell.

Outside draw doesn't make life easy and hard to know what to expect from this formerly useful handicapper who looks to have lost his way a little. Comes back from a long break here for a new yard and may be one for the future once they have got to grips with him.

Showed some good form at the backend of last year off a declining mark when winning over a mile at Newmarket. Certainly hasn't had conditions to suit in either outing this year and was undone by the draw last time out. Mark has crept back up though and that leaves him something to find here.

Winner for his previous yard at Goodwood last April off a 2lb higher mark but never really quite fired after that. Both outings for this yard at the end of last season were disappointing but he features off a good mark if they can find the key to him.

C&D winner who has been a consistent sort over this trip in a couple of recent outings on the AW. Can travel well in his races but the losing run is starting to stack up now and may need a little luck in-running here.

Had some useful form in France when with his former yard but his one run so far in Britain was inconclusive over 1m2f. He's dropped in trip now but a watching brief is advised after a long break.

The wide draw makes life a little tricky here for this improving sort who comes from a stable that have started the season well. The two wins last year came off lower marks but this 7f suits if he can overcome the outside berth.

His sole win last year came off a 7lb lower mark over 6f and he showed some decent form after that victory from higher marks when placed at Ripon and Haydock. Very much shaped as if he needed the run after an absence last time out on the AW off a 3lb higher mark and this run should tell us more about his wellbeing.

Returns from a long break but did win two of her last three races in handicaps off lower marks when last seen. This is more competitive though and she would need to step up a little to take a hand in this.

Well enough drawn for a front-runner and won two handicaps from the front last year over further (a mile) at Carlisle and Pontefract. Has won off a long break before and the stable had a big-priced winner earlier in the week at Pontefract.

Forecasts

Roll On Rory (9/2), Penwortham (5/1), Twin Appeal (11/2), Lat Hawill (11/2), God Willing (13/2), Gurkha Friend (11/1), Bertiewhittle (12/1), Mishaal (16/1), Ionization (20/1), Russian Realm (22/1), Eternal (25/1), B Fifty Two (40/1)

Verdict

A competitive start to a very good card where finding winners will be hard. With the Fahey team making a good start to the season Penwortham needs to be respected here although the outside berth makes life challenging. Twin Appeal travels well in his races but the losing run remains a worry and others like God Willing, Bertiewhittle and Mishaal all add to the mix here although none are winning machines. This track favours front runners though and as long as they don’t get into a battle too far out both ROLL ON RORY and Gurkha Brave should be suited by the way this is run with the former making the most appeal as a former C&D winner.
  1. Roll On Rory
  2. Twin Appeal
  3. God Willing
