Twice successful from nine starts as a juvenile including in a small field Conditions Stakes at Salisbury in September 2016 (6F soft). Outclassed in the Listed Rockingham Stakes on his final outing of the year, but returns with a leading rider booked and has won on a fast surface previously (Windsor, August 2016).
Twice a winner over this trip as a juvenile, ending the campaign in a progressive manner. A winner of a Catterick novice median auction stakes in August 2016, he rounded off the season with a career best neck second to Merry Banter in a Haydock nursery. 6lb higher and this is stronger but respected.
Thirsk turf winner in July 2016, but has absolutely thrived on synthetics this winter, progressing from winning off a mark of 69 at Newcastle in January to a mark of 82 at Wolverhampton in February. Holds an entry at Lingfield on Good Friday, so an interesting runner now switched to turf and upped to this grade. Front runner.
Unexposed sort with just the three starts as a juvenile and unraced since July 2016. A 2L debut winner at Haydock in May 2016, he was out of his depth at Royal Ascot when last of 11 in the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes, and rounded off by finishing third of four at Chester to Big Time Baby. This looks a competitive starting point for this three-year-old.
Enjoyed a fine winter on the AW winning four times between November and January. The handicapper has made life tougher, but this speedy filly hasn't been disgraced, and wasn't beaten far behind Major Jumbo and Blitz (runs at 2.20pm) at Wolverhampton in late February. Top jockey replaces regular rider Robert Winston.
Three time winner on turf as a juvenile, ending the year with a double at Ripon and Haydock. Got the better of a couple of these rivals in those races (Major Jumbo and Kyllang Rock) and has been freshened up on the AW lately, so can be expected to go well.
Decisive 5L Beverley maiden winner in September 2016 (not the strongest of races), and tailed off when tried in Listed company at Chantilly in November 2016. Returns wearing cheek-pieces with riders claim helpful, but probably in deep enough in this competitive race.
Forecasts
Kyllang Rock (2/1), Major Jumbo (9/4), Smokey Lane (9/2), Merry Banter (7/1), Dazacam (12/1), Plata O Plomo (20/1), Reedanjas (25/1)
A fascinating race looks in store with a whole host of late progressing 2016 juveniles set to clash. Smokey Lane has the experience at this level, and has Ryan Moore booked, but does have to give weight away to all of his rivals. Both Dazacam and Major Jumbo have enjoyed stellar AW campaigns, with the latter almost certain to blaze the trail here and it will be intriguing to see if either horse can reproduce their best form back on turf. However, KYLLANG ROCK was really getting his act together on turf late last year and got to within a neck of Merry Banter on his final start at Haydock and it's worth chancing that he can continue this progression with his trainer often very strong with his three-year-old's.
- Kyllang Rock
- Major Jumbo
- Smokey Lane
