Tough sort who loves this track, and has run his race over C&D the past twice when going down to the thriving Teo Vivo and the progressive mare Kelka. This looks a shade easier, and this two time course winner races from the same mark on ever drying ground (which he handles).

Notched a four timer between April and July 2016 (two for previous trainer Sam England), with his mark rising from 87 to 107. This proved his ability to handle decent ground, and he probably found the surface too deep returning from a six month break at Navan in January before producing a clear career best when 2½L second to Silver Streak at Musselburgh early last month. Holds a Scottish Champion Hurdle entry.

Most effective on a sound surface, but has not yet achieved his Flat heights over hurdles, and was a beaten 5/4f in a 2m3f novices hurdle at Musselburgh recently. Dropped in trip, but no reason to expect he's good enough to win a handicap like this race.

Landed some good bets when taking a C&D novices hurdle by 2¼L in February (heavy), and ran right up to that form under a penalty when no match for the strapping Reivers Lad back here last month. Tries the handicap route on drying ground, and is a nice enough long term prospect for local owner Joe Buzzeo.

One time talented chaser for Keith Reveley, who has shown he retains some verve from the front on both of his recent starts at Sedgefield (off a nine month break), but this is a stronger contest and likely to have to settle for a minor role.

Verdict

Violoniste had the misfortune to bump into a rapidly improving sort in Silver Streak at Musselburgh last month, and looks a real contender in this race with ground conditions to suit. Applaus looks the pick of the novices (younger horses), but this drying ground might not play to his stamina strengths. However, NUTS WELL is the horse the others all have to beat. Despite shouldering top-weight, he's yet to run a bad race in four spins at this track (1,1,2,2) and he's been at the peak of his form over this C&D the past twice (from this mark), and should find this ground adequate (well watered) in a slightly weaker race today.
  1. Nuts Well
  2. Violoniste
  3. Applaus
