Pulled up on stable debut in this race in 2016 before bouncing back to finish 4½L third to Robintheaulad at Carlisle later in the week. However, not seen in action since so fitness is taken on trust, and ideally could do with having learnt to settle during his twelve month sabbatical.

Green and readily outpaced when finishing sixth of seven to Calix Delafayette on debut at Ayr earlier this month. Races on similar testing ground today, but looks likely to find a few of these rivals too sharp.

Flat pedigree and hails from a stable not known for bumper winners. Raced over enthusiastically at Newcastle in February, and simply had no chance of lasting home, with the tongue tie going on as a result.

Plugged on to finish third to the odds-on Patience Tony on debut at Sedgefield in May 2016 (Good to Firm), but little further improvement in each of his two subsequent starts, including on his seasonal return at Wetherby last week. By far the most testing ground he's encountered to date.

50/1
Moderate form in five starts in Irish Point-to-Points between February and April 2016, and makes his rules debut for a new trainer with little track record in these type of races. A brother to the ill-fated Tim Vaughan trained hurdler Lamool, but not considered today.
Beaten just under 7L when third on debut to Calix Delafayette at Ayr earlier this month (outpaced). Entitled to improve for that experience, and his dam produced three winners over hurdles and fences (including Silverton and Rinnagree Rosie). Respected.

Third foal, home bred, and a half-sister to 2m4f winning hurdler Conjola. Left Simon Waugh following her distant fourth placed debut in a mares bumper at Wetherby in November 2016 to rejoin the family of her breeder. Better with time.

2/1
Three time runner up in bumpers so far, meeting decent enough rivals on each occasion, including Midnight Shadow (Newcastle, 1m6f soft), Uncle Alastair (Ayr, 2m soft) and Golden Jeffrey (Ayr, 2m heavy). One of the form horses in a very winnable contest with the North's leading jumps rider booked.

7/4
Finished three places, and over 7L behind fellow debutant Dunly when vainly chasing home 10L winner Midnight Shadow at Newcastle in December before improving to get within 1¼L of Brecon Hill at Catterick last month. That form is solid with the third placed Golden Jeffrey winning since (beating Dunly by 8L at Ayr).

Forecasts

Teescomponents Lad (7/4), Dunly (2/1), Baracalu (4/1), Up Helly Aa King (10/1), Corinda (20/1), Jacarno (33/1), Bonchester (40/1), Longmore (50/1), Getonsam (100/1)

Verdict

This very winnable maiden bumper most likely rests between the clear form horses Dunly and TEESCOMPONENTS LAD. The selection appeared well suited by stepping up in trip at Catterick last month in a race which has yielded the subsequent winner Golden Jeffrey. Whilst he has already been beaten by Dunly at Newcastle, he's probably made more progress than that rival since, and the James Ewart trained four-year-old might have to play bridesmaid for a fourth time in succession despite the able assistance of the North's leading National Hunt jockey Brian Hughes.
  1. Teescomponents Lad
  2. Dunly
  3. Up Helly Aa King
