Sidestepped a race at Haydock on Wednesday to come here in search of better ground. Has not really improved since an impressive debut and latest effort behind a smart Nicky Henderson mare is flattering. Looks vulnerable under a penalty unless the extra few furlongs here make a difference.

Winner of three Flat races in France so not devoid of ability. Has shown little so far and extra distance is not guaranteed to help. New headgear combination tried by yard who are 0-11 with hurdlers here in last five seasons.

Looked a fortunate winner of a mare's maiden point-to-point in Ireland and finished 18L behind Whatduhavtoget prior to that. Sold subsequently at Aintree in April 2016 for £70,000. Finished down the field on her bumper debut in October when weak in the market. Yard are 17-57 with their hurdlers here over past five seasons. Worth a check in the market.

Second foal of a dam who was a prolific winning point-to-pointer. Looks the type to come on for the run.

Looks up against it here and will do better in time when sent handicapping. May need a stiffer test than this.

Smart stayer on the Flat who would have found 2m too sharp on first two starts over hurdles. Forced to make the running and still ran the useful Finian's Oscar to 4½L at Exeter, although there was a bigger gulf in class than that margin suggests. Appeared to find 3m too far last time and this race looks perfect.

Forecasts

Whatduhavtoget (11/8), Taws (13/8), Big Robin (11/4), Apalis (40/1), Jaunty Clementine (66/1), Cadira Beeches (100/1)

Verdict

TAWS is rated 90+ on the Flat and has shown enough this winter to suggest a race of this nature is within her capabilities. The trip looks right based on her first three starts over hurdles and connections will be pleased that Whatduhavtoget is present to dictate a reasonable pace. The Skelton mare has performed to a consistent level without actually progressing. It will be tough to concede 7lb to the selection but, in a race lacking depth, she would be the one to benefit should the selection misfire. Big Robin makes her hurdling debut for powerful connections. The form book leaves her with something to find but the mare is in the right hands to produce the necessary improvement.
  1. Taws
  2. Whatduhavtoget
  3. Big Robin
