Connections were keen to go to the RSA Chase last week and think plenty of this likeable chaser who may not quite be a Grade One performer, but has won a couple of races nicely this winter. All wins have had some cut in the ground for those looking for a reason to take him on, but should have too much class for this lot.

1-24 says plenty about the abilities of this veteran, that sole success coming in a Uttoxeter handicap hurdle four years ago. Has failed to complete on his last two starts and impossible to fancy today.

Won a decent Haydock handicap hurdle (2m7f, good) this time last year from a mark of 122. Well beaten on only run since in the autumn at Cheltenham. Clear preference for a sound surface. Interesting that connections choose to give him a chasing debut at this time of year and will need to be fully tuned up to win it.

Not seen a racecourse for nigh on three years and that was his one and only start. Point-to-point for was not red hot prior to that and very much one to watch in this.

Delusionofgrandeur (4/9), Petethepear (2/1), I Know The Code (50/1), Thedfactor (100/1)

Verdict

After considering the RSA Chase at Cheltenham last week, connections of DELUSIONOFGRANDEUR have chosen a good name for their charge, though sense has prevailed and can be rewarded by coming here to pick up a nice little pot with a possible eye on Aintree. Petethepear is the only other runner we can take seriously going into the race and given the time of year, this may well be a sighter for him, as he would probably have to be at his best to have any hope of toppling the topweight, despite being in receipt of 10lb.
