Stayed on well to make winning start over hurdles in 2m3f contest at Naas towards the end of January. Should make another bold attempt over this longer trip.

Won maiden hurdle at Naas in November over 2m3f, since finished runner-up in Grade 1 at Newbury behind Messire Des Obeaux. That form boosted at Cheltenham in the Neptune and sets the standard now.

Penny dropped over 2m2f at Clonmel earlier this month after a couple of disappointing efforts previously over hurdles. With that win behind him, there should be more in the offing.

Justified odds-on to win a bumper and a novice hurdle before coming a cropper in 3m Grade 3 contest at Cork behind Rathnure Rebel. Drops in trip and should have a say in this.

Forecasts

Baltazar D'allier (8/11), Monbeg Notorious (10/3), Augustin (4/1), Clara Sorrento (12/1)

Verdict

Quite a trappy four-runner contest to begin proceedings and it would be foolish to write off any of the quartet. The nod is given to BALTAZAR D'ALLIER as much on his Newbury second as his maiden success at Naas. His run behind Messire Des Obeaux in the Challow on New Year's Eve reads well given that rival finished third in the Neptune this week and he can get back to winning ways in this. Augustin made a winning debut and won't go down without a fight as the champion trainer seeks to strike a blow back on home soil after shedding his title at Cheltenham. Clara Sorrento should be capable of better now he's won and Monbeg Notorious is also a worthy contender despite an odds-on reverse at Cork last time out.
  1. Baltazar D'allier
  2. Augustin
  3. Clara Sorrento
