4lb higher today than when scoring at Gowran Park a couple of years ago and shown very little in the past year to support him with any confidence at the moment.
Justified favouritism in a Thurles maiden hurdle last season but was last of 11 at Limerick in October when heading the market for the only time over fences. Handicapper giving him a chance after a barren spell and return to 3m a plus, so a market check is advised.
In cracking form in recent months, rising 23lb in the handicap. Both recent wins have been over 2m5½f and he doesn't seem to be quite as effective over today's trip. Competitive, no doubt, but also vulnerable.
Now 7lb below his last winning mark (December 2015) after finishing well beaten on every start since. Has been tried to no avail in blinkers some time ago and connections now try cheek pieces in the hope of a return to form.
Been in good form over the winter, winning a Limerick handicap hurdle in December and then being runner-up three times over fences, including in a Naas handicap chase (3m, heavy) last time. Up just 1lb for that and looks to be a leading player.
6lb higher than when scoring at Navan (3m, soft/heavy) in January 2016 and, while not disgraced this term, he looks to be in need of slipping back to a similar mark to that win to be ending the drought.
Over two years since he won a soft ground Leopardstown handicap chase (2m5f, soft) and remains 3lb higher still, despite showing little of note since. Hard to fancy.
8lb lower than when runner-up at Ballinrobe last April but badly out of form in the winter months. Cannot totally rule out a revival of fortunes with spring now upon us, but does take a little imagination to see him winning.
Forecasts
Cappacurry Zak (6/4), White Arm (9/2), Paper Lantern (5/1), Oscar Lantern (8/1), Do Be Doin' (10/1), Bothair Clei (12/1), Toubaloo (14/1), Fergiethelegend (20/1)
Paper Lantern has been improving all winter and cannot be ruled out from doing so again, but he looks worth taking on at the likely odds over a trip that he is not yet proven at. Preference is for CAPPACURRY ZAK, who has also been steadily on the rise and does have proven stamina. Oscar Lantern looks next best.
- Cappacurry Zak
- Paper Lantern
- Oscar Lantern
