Veteran who showed he still retains some of his old ability when winning this race last year. 13lb higher in the handicap now and arguably prefers more testing conditions in his advancing years, but still cannot be dismissed out of hand.

Just got up in very testing ground at Towcester in February last year but has put up two tame performances since. Remains on the same mark as those efforts and is entitled to find a few of these too good.

Mr Bachsterp48
Age: 12|  Weight: 11-10| J: R Patrick(7)| T: Kerry Lee| OR:  97
3/1
Last time out C&D winner who goes up 6lb for that victory. That rise seems fair and this contest doesn't seem any harder. Overall he has won two of his four races here and the ground conditions should suit. The one to beat.

Dalkadamp,t26
Age: 6|  Weight: 11-5| J: L P Aspell| T: J R Jenkins| OR:  92
15/8
Sole win under rules came in a hurdle race at Uttoxeter in December (2m, heavy), but he remains a young horse open to improvement, especially over fences, and any further rain would be a bonus with a top jockey in the saddle.
5

Bahumbugb5
Age: 7|  Weight: 10-0| J: Jordan Williams(7)| T: J W Mullins| OR:  69
14/1
12 race maiden who hasn't shown much improvement with experimentation with a range of headgear. On a career low mark now but has never run his best races on this sort of ground. Others hold more convincing claims.

Forecasts

Dalkadam (15/8), Bertenbar (5/2), Mr Bachster (3/1), Edgar (7/1), Bahumbug (14/1)

Verdict

Bertenbar returns to this race having taken it last year but is much higher in the handicap, not to mention being a teenager by now. He can't be discounted though, and neither can Dalkadam, who looks the potential improver in the field, especially if the ground is particularly soft. The suggestion, though, is MR BACHSTER. A 6lb rise for a C&D win last time out is fair enough, and conditions here should suit especially in what looks to be a relatively uncompetitive race.
  1. Mr Bachster
  2. Dalkadam
  3. Bertenbar
