Royal Artillery Gold Cup (Military Amateur Riders' Chase)
6YO plus  |  Class 3  |  3m 37y  |  Soft (Good to Soft in places - Heavy in places down hill)  |  7 Runners  |  Turf  |   Weighed In
Represents a yard that has taken two of the last four renewals of this race. Winner of an amateurs' race at Cheltenham in October. Has an experienced rider on board to boost his obvious claims.
Has been on the decline over the past two years but his two best performances during this time have been over the C&D. Rider finished runner-up in this last year.
Looked an exciting prospect when winning a novice chase by a distance in May 2015. Off the track subsequently until an eyecatching fourth at Newbury last month. Ridden with more restraint that day and blinkers are refitted.
Useful staying handicapper at his peak but his last win was over three years ago. His reappearance at Uttoxeter offered little encouragement and he will need to step up significantly to figure here.
RATHLIN ROSE has the best BHA rating in the lineup and it is possible that mark underestimates him having beaten a 120-rated horse by a distance on his chasing debut. He will come on a great deal for his reappearance last month when he was not disgraced in coming from off the pace to finish fourth in a better race than this. His best form has been shown under more positive rides and with the blinkers reapplied he could take some catching. Troika Steppes jumps and stays well and looks the main danger from a yard that have done well here in the military races over the past few years. Ardkilly Witness has reserved his best performances for this venue and he may not be far away.
