Not disgraced on handicap debut at Ffos Las against some better horses than this (2m, heavy). Now has top weight to contend with but has some of the stronger claims in the field.
Some form in points before performing fairly poorly during three starts over hurdles. One of the likelier handicap newcomers off a mark of 94, but that isn't saying much.
Has run poorly first in a bumper and then in a series of maiden and novice hurdles. May struggle under one of the higher weights on this handicap debut, even with cheekpieces and the assistance of the champion jockey, both for the first time.
Finished down the field on every start in low level maiden/novice hurdles, difficult to see him opening his account on handicap debut unless this new trip brings about a revolution in his performance.
Beaten 70L on handicap debut on Boxing Day at Fontwell, and is dropped 5lb for that performance. Cheekpieces added so will be interesting to see if that makes a difference.
Ran as expected when sent off 100/1 or more during three novice hurdle events in November and December, will need to improve on that to be in with a chance here off this opening mark.
First start for a new trainer today having moved from Kim Bailey's, and having had a break since May last year. Form in the book is better than many of these, but is seen to her best on a sounder surface than what is forecast today.
Didn't run as poorly as some of the others in novice hurdles, after managing to finish fourth in a Ludlow bumper. Dropped 3lb for handicap debut seventh here last month, and can improve on that placing this time.
Not disgraced on handicap debut at Sedgefield last time and he has slipped slightly down the weights after that performance. Must overcome a break since last summer but seems one of the more likely winners.
Was just about last of the finishes on handicap debut at Uttoxeter last month. Plenty more needed with a 4lb drop; this mark still seems unlikely to be a winning one for this gelding.
Forecasts
Goonjim (9/4), Only A Tipple (9/2), Champagne Benefit (5/1), Steel Native (6/1), Without Frontier (17/2), Highland Life (10/1), El Tiburon (16/1), Tara's Rainbow (20/1), Manton Boy (20/1), Wonga Swinger (22/1)
A weak novice hurdle with quite a few handicap debuts, it will be interesting to see how those runners perform off their opening marks. Of those who have run in handicaps before, however, STEEL NATIVE could be able to overcome top weight. His fourth last time out at Ffos Las is some of the better form on offer, and we know he'll handle some cut in the ground. He is taken to see off Only A Tipple, who could be worth chancing for a new yard after a break, and El Tiburon, who may well improve for the first time headgear.
1. Steel Native
2. Only A Tipple
3. El Tiburon
