Tailed off on handicap debut over 2m at Down Royal on Boxing Day. Significant step up in trip could help, with a third placed effort (maiden hurdle) over 2m6f already on his CV. First run across the Irish Sea.

Been a good servant over the years to these connections, and has won at this track in the past. A winner for this rider at Hexham in November (Soft), but that was a weak race and 3lbs higher here.

Snapping Turtle14
Age: 12|  Weight: 11-9| J: Callum Whillans(3)| T: D W Whillans| OR:  96
9/2
A veteran, with just the three starts this year so far. Clearly straighter for his Newcastle reappearance in November (made running) when just held after making good progress from the rear next time behind Brian Boranha at Catterick in December. Awarded the race by the Stewards after that rival weighed in light, and only a distant fourth next time back at the same track (third has won since).

Age: 5|  Weight: 11-8| J: Henry Brooke| T: A C Whillans| OR:  95
9/2
Third in bumper debut at this track in February 2016, but has achieved little else of note so far, but up in trip for his third start in a handicap and dropped a few pounds to a mark of 95. Needs to show more.

9/1
One from five in Irish PTP's and sold for £7,000 at Doncaster in August 2016. Started a big odds in three starts in maiden and novice hurdles, but connections not hanging about in going straight up in trip for handicap debut.

4/1
Not run since May 2016, but worth a look in the market as connections are well known for a gamble. A two time winner over hurdles, including from a mark of 87 over C&D in December 2013 (Good to Soft), stayed on strongly, and just 4lbs higher here.

Gorey Lanet,v15
Age: 11|  Weight: 11-2| J: Colm McCormack(3)| T: J R Norton| OR:  89
12/1
Now an eleven year old, but won off this mark (89) at Uttoxeter on New Year's Eve 2015 and just the four starts since. Likely to be fitter than for last two starts in December (off a nine month break), and was a runner up here over 2m6f in March 2014 off a mark of 93.

Hurricane Ritat119
Age: 7|  Weight: 10-13| J: Sam Coltherd(5)| T: W Coltherd| OR:  86
5/1
A runner up here over 2m6f in May 2015 to Isaacstown Lad, but off the track for 18 months until returning in October 2016. Didn't run desperately badly here last month when a beaten favourite (fifth) but poor in two starts since, albeit with handicapper taking a huge risk dropping another 4lbs to 86.

Horse silk
Notonebuttwop,h1,t9
Age: 10|  Weight: 10-0| J: Thomas Dowson(5)| T: Kenny Johnson| OR:  73
10/1
Won plenty of races for Chris Grant (mainly at Newcastle), but has always had his problems and been something of an in and out performer. Shown nothing so far in four starts for new trainer and debatable how much ability he retains these days.

Forecasts

Brae On (4/1), Snapping Turtle (9/2), Brackenmoss Rory (9/2), Hurricane Rita (5/1), Bescot Springs (9/1), Kings Eclipse (9/1), Notonebuttwo (10/1), Gorey Lane (12/1), Flinders River (20/1)

Verdict

An awful race which in truth looks tailor made for a winning gamble. To this respect there are a few likely contenders, most notably Brae On. However, a couple of these are well handicapped on their form of old, including the eleven-year-old Gorey Lane who sports reasonable course form at this level. However, preference is for HURRICANE RITA who has dropped 11lbs since finishing fifth here in early December, and if capable of recapturing her form from May 2015 is thrown in off 86. She's worth chancing in a poor race. 1. Hurricane Rita 2. Gorey Lane 3. Kings Eclipse
