Racing betting tips: Sunday October 11
1pt e.w. Brosay in the 15:32 Goodwood at 11/2 (General 1/5 1,2,3,4) - min 5/1
1pt e.w. Cerulean Bay in the 16:42 Goodwood at 5/1 (General 1/5 1,2,3,4) - min 9/2
15:12 Chepstow - DragonBet Best Odds Guaranteed Handicap Hurdle 2m7½f
Pappariche needs a mention here as this big step up in trip on her handicap debut makes her a lot more interesting. First and second in two point-to-point runs in Ireland, she had three quickish runs in the spring to get a mark and the drop back to two miles on the last of them was totally unsuitable.
Pappariche is from a family that all wanted much more of a stamina test, with his dam a half-sister to Cheltenham Festival winner Massini’s Maguire and useful 3m chaser Twirling Magnet and this trip is going to suit her a lot better, so it’s a case of whether she’s ready to go on his first start since May.
My gut feeling is that it won’t be today given Christian Williams has a poor record at the track and his horses tend to thrive in the spring, but she certainly merits a second look and it will be a surprise if she doesn’t prove much better than her opening mark in time.
15:32 Goodwood - Virgin Bet Daily Extra Places Handicap 6f
Course form always tends to come to the fore at Goodwood, so we are happy to stick with BROSAY here as he has run two huge races to be runner-up twice over C&D this season and is easily forgiven a lesser effort at Salisbury last time, where the race didn’t pan out to suit.
Charlie Pike’s gelding is suited by coming late off a fast pace, and tends to get races run to suit here, as he showed when just touched off by Percy’s Star here last month. That was on quick ground, but Brosay is just as effective on a softer surface and the softer ground may make his high draw more of an advantage than it was here last time, where he fared much the best of those drawn in double-figure stalls despite being drawn furthest away from the winner.
He is 2lb better off with Percy’s Star now and deserves a change of luck.
16:42 Goodwood - Inkerman London Handicap 1m
It might be tempting to say that CERULEAN BAY has a tough task under ten stone here, but in reality, this looks a golden opportunity for the course specialist.
He’s run three times over C&D in this class, winning twice and finishing second in just about the most competitive handicap run at the track on the other occasion. One of his wins came when lumping topweight to victory in this contest last year, where he gave 10lb and a beating to Back In Black, who is now rated 108 after finishing fourth in Group 2 company on his latest start.
Cerulean Bay ran up to that form when an excellent second to Archivist in the Golden Mile here in August and that form has been franked with the winer bolting up in the Group 3 Strensall Stakes at York. Cerulean Bay hasn’t fared so well, but will appreciate the return to his favourite venue and the handicapper has kindly dropped him 3lb since his last run here.
