15:48 Pontefract – Class 4 (0-80) Handicap 6f

The Good Biscuit was below form at Hamilton last time, but even then, he wasn’t beaten far - just 2½ lengths in fact – and he has been a model of consistency for Ruth Carr this season. A winner twice on soft ground here last season when also catching the eye in defeat at the course, he looks well drawn next to likely pacemaker Mr Cool here and expected overnight rain is in his favour. In truth, he is effective on any ground but rain will be against some of his rivals and therefore a positive to his chances.

Prior to Hamilton, The Good Biscuit had finished a staying-on second to Rosenpur at Chester, again demonstrating his liking for a turning track. He’s still on a fair mark and is taken to bounce back to his best with the race likely to be run to suit him.

17:30 Southwell – Class 5 (0-95) Handicap Hurdle 2m4f88y

Beorma was an easy winner for the Skeltons over fences last week and has no penalty for that back over hurdles, but while she’s been priced up a if something of a penalty kick, there are a couple of questions over her prospects; she seemed to benefit from the switch to fences last time, with the form of her Worcester win better than anything she had previously managed over hurdles – indeed, she was tailed off when pulled up in a race won by This Sway here in March, and while that was probably needed after an absence, it’s not hard to poke holes in the form of last week’s chase debut, with opposition amounting to little.

Beorma also needs to show she can back up quickly, particularly no she steps up in trip, and This Sway represents a spot of value against her as a result. The selection clearly goes very well here and arrives in form after a solid second at Ffos Las a month ago, form that has been franked a couple of times since. His hurdles form is much superior to that shown so far by the favourite and he is begging to be backed as a result, admitting the possibility that Beorma may have turned something of a corner for her shrewd stable.

20:15 Newcastle – Class 5 (0-75) Handicap 1m5y

Military Leader has shown improved form to win both starts so far this season and is fully expected to complete the hat-trick, with the form of his Southwell return well advertised with both he and runner-up Roaring Ralph winning next time, as did Gallant Lion, who was well beaten that day. After that win on Tapeta, Phil Makin’s gelding switched to turf where he made most to beat Hale End, one of a trio of last-time-out winners in opposition.

The second and third from that contest had finished first and second in a similar 0-75 contest at Wetherby shortly after and the form looks solid for the grade. Military Leader has gone up just 3lb for his latest win and should make a bold bid to maintain his winning run in what looks an ordinary event for the level.
