There’s one I’m keen on here and that’s Getreadytorumble.
Clearly a bit of a backward type, we didn’t see him until he was a 3yo but he quickly made up into a useful handicapper and was a length second to Naana’s Sparkle in the 3yo 5f handicap at the Glorious Goodwood meeting last year. After finishing off last year with a third in the Listed Rous Stakes here at Ascot, he came back better than ever this season, third to Mission Central in the Listed Woodlands Stakes, and trying to give the winner 7lb in the process. He was drawn out of things at Haydock on his next start, then ran respectably in the King Charles II Stakes (had the worst of the draw again, and blew the start) and did best of those held up in the Dragon Stakes at Sandown, a race where it paid to be bang on the pace (first three home always front rank). Back in handicap company, he can make his class count.
16:52 York
On the face of it Zarvali was a bit disappointing on his latest start here when stepping up to a mile, but he got a bit of a nothing ride, Kevin Stott seemingly not knowing whether to stick or twist and in the end any chance he had fizzled away with his stamina running out late on.
Previously he’d looked a horse on the up for Roger Fell, with the form of his Catterick win over 7f back in May working out well, and he got no run when sixth to Reliable Ricki here in May, running on strongly once in the clear and getting the comment “did well in the circumstances.” He again ran well when third at Thirsk last time, doing all his best work late to nab third on the line, and back at seven furlongs today, is worth another chance to get back on track.
Izzari is a bit all-or-nothing but is twice a winner at Newcastle and might well have made it three had he had a bit better luck in running on his reappearance here in March, not seeing daylight until it was too late but finishing a close fourth and with running left. Since then, he’s turned in four pretty poor efforts on turf, it must be said, and the only benefit of that is that he’s dropped 7lb since the start of the season, leaving him on a very dangerous mark.
Hopes are pinned on a return to Newcastle, and a well-run mile, which ought to suit as he can be keen. He has a potentially good draw in stall 14 to work from and whilst that might mean waiting for gaps again, he should get the late rail run, so often a plus point to a horse’s chance here.
17:10 Newcastle
This will take next to no winning, and many will simply stop at recent winner Black Cab, who won a similar event at Wolverhampton last time easily enough. He’s been put up 5lb for that, which is probably enough, but more worrying is that two previous efforts at Newcastle have seen him well beaten. He has had wind surgery since then, so you might see a better effort, but it’s a concern all the same.
Let’s Go Hugo might be the answer. His record in Class 6 handicaps here reads 621244 and you can add in another victory in a Class 5 handicap too, so goes well here, and although recent turf efforts wouldn’t give you much hope, he’s only 1-28 on the grass as opposed to 3-21 on artificial surfaces, so it may simply be he prefers a sand surface these days. Wouldn't be any surprise to see him bounce straight back to form today.
