Ben Linfoot

Magic Saint can get back on the winning trail in the Ladbrokes Handicap Chase at Newbury on Saturday. Paul Nicholls’ five-year-old shaped well on his first start since wind surgery in the BetVictor Gold Cup at Cheltenham, where he travelled well before finding little up the hill. He’s yet to prove he stays that far and the drop back to two miles is no surprise, as a strong gallop at this trip look his optimum conditions. Off 147 he’s only 5lb higher than when winning at Wincanton last season and this race looks sure to be run to suit.

Despite residing towards the bottom of the weights, the Neil Mulholland-trained gelding is no stranger to big-race success having taken the 888Sport Handicap Chase at Kempton (3m) last February off just a 4lb lower mark.

On his previous start, Walt showed he was on the upgrade when failing by a neck on this course to hold off De Rasher Counter, who has been popular in the ante-post markets for this race yet now renews rivalry on 6lb worse terms.

Moreover, James Best's mount comes here in good form after a battling win at Taunton (for which he picks up a 5lb penalty) where he fought on gamely to beat Brother Tedd who could be well handicapped over fences.

With the Mulholland team running at nearly one winner for every four runners in the past fortnight, Walt looks significantly under-estimated in the market at four times the price of De Rasher Counter who was well beaten on his hurdling reappearance.

Gary Moore's charge looks a value call here having been in deep in the Kingwell Hurdle last time. Had previously run as well as ever behind Silver Streak at Kempton.

David Ord

The Sir Peter O’Sullevan Memorial Handicap Chase is a competitive heat at Newbury but Molineaux makes plenty of appeal for Colin Tizzard and Robbie Power. He was held up on his reappearance here and was still travelling very strongly when making a bad mistake four out.

He finished nicely under considerate handling afterwards and the handicapper dropped him two pounds. That takes him one below his last winning rating at Wincanton in January and there were signs on his return that a summer wind operation could eek out improvement. He’ll need a clear round but is handicapped to go close with one and his team are flying.

Premier League tips

The Jose Mourinho era has been surprisingly entertaining so far with 11 goals in his two games in charge. With defensive problems set to take a while to sort out, we feel this is the right time for a decent Bournemouth side to finally find the back of the net in a Tottenham away game.

Brighton do pose a threat in the final third this season and, for all Liverpool's effective performances this term, they have conceded more often with both teams scoring in 11 of their 13 games.

They still have work to do at the back and the odds-against price looks a worthy shout here.

Dale Tempest - Football betting insight

In seven league games he’s only started four times but has an amazing strike-rate with five goals and three assists. In that time he’s had 16 shots and managed to get 12 on target.

Pulisic's ability to get tap-ins and chances in the six-yard box, from a wide starting position, is fantastic and shows his desire to get into the penalty area and get goals.

His goal in Valencia on Wednesday was the perfect example of a natural poacher just putting the ball over the line. I spent all my career doing just that so appreciate watching a player with that ability!

Abraham may not start this weekend but Chelsea will still be strongly fancied to take care of West Ham - either way though, get with Pulisic on the goals and stick with him.

Tom Carnduff - EFL preview

I backed James McClean to score in last week's victory over Wigan, and while it didn't come in, I was more than satisfied with his performance in which he did everything but score.

It was arguably McClean's best performance in a Stoke shirt and if it wasn't for Mame Biram Diouf's late goal he would have certainly grabbed the headlines.

There's a best price of 13/2 available on McClean netting anytime here, 80/1 on a brace should things click into place, but the value on a single goal is more than appealing.

He'll be back in the left wing role in a 4-3-3 system on Saturday, a position that seems to suit him based on the Wigan performance.

After coming in twice in the last two weeks, are are going for the hat-trick with the Sporting Life ACCA.

Eden Sharav to beat Daniel Wells at 13/8

Daniel Wells produced a solid performance to beat Zhang Anda in round one but that has been his first moment of cheer in an otherwise disappointing campaign and he could be vulnerable when coming up against Eden Sharav in the second round on Saturday.

Sharav is a talented operator who reached the semi-finals of the Northern Ireland Open last term but he, too, has been short of results this time around. Nevertheless, Sharav ran Barry Hawkins very close in Belfast recently before beating a former winner of this event in Shaun Murphy on Thursday and he has to be the play here at 13/8.

FORMULA ONE

F1 Insider

Verstappen did me proud in Brazil by taking a relatively comfortable victory from pole position at Interlagos, and it looks like the Dutchman has been underrated once again this weekend.

Ferrari were off the pace once again in race trim and it's fair to say their form peaked straight after the summer break, so Sunday's race might boil down once again to a shootout between Verstappen's Red Bull and Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes.

Hamilton could well edge the qualifying battle and so is deservedly a slight favourite, but Max has the bit between his teeth and should be backed each-way to give the world champion plenty to think about over the winter break.
