13:20 Yarmouth - Join Moulton Racing Syndicates Apprentices’ Handicap 7f3y

10mm of rain late Sunday has turned Yarmouth soft, so it’s best to concentrate on those who will definitely handle the conditions. One such is GOLDEN PHAROAH, who was in good form this time last year, winning on heavy at Ffos Las before a narrow defeat at Doncaster at the end of October. It’s interesting that Scott Dixon has once again entered him in the same Doncaster handicap, and he won’t get a penalty if winning this, which looks the plan.

Admittedly, Golden Pharaoh has been well beaten in two starts after a lengthy summer break, but he’s been sent off at huge odds for those races which have clearly been needed. He did a little better at York last time than he had at Southwell a few days earlier, and both runs have been used to get him back to peak fitness having been off since March. He’s also dropped below the mark off which he went close at Doncaster last term, and that is a bonus, intended or otherwise. He’s expected to be back to his best now, and that has been telegraphed in the market - no 50/1 available today - but that merely confirms that this has been the plan, and we’re happy to get involved now that he has his conditions.

15:28 Yarmouth - Seadell Shops & Holiday Chalets Handicap 1m2f

Sweetstevie is a hard one to love given he’s only the one good effort from six starts, but that did come over this C&D in soft ground, albeit in a poor Classified contest, and he ran well to finish second to the odds-on Rockafeller Skank, who had won the previous day and was way in front of his mark. He rallied well after looking held to get second, staying on all the way to the line, and although clearly flattered by how near he got to the eased-down winner, it was still a better effort. I was there that day, and I liked him in the paddock, too.

Two runs since then have seen him well beaten, but 12f at Brighton on good ground wasn’t his thing, and firm ground here in July probably wasn’t to his liking either. He can clearly go okay fresh, so the break since then is probably a good thing, and the question for me is whether leaving the visor off is deliberate, given he was pulling quite hard in it previously. I’d be willing to give him the benefit of the doubt if the price allows.

16:38 Yarmouth - Brandford Restaurants And Bar Handicap 6f

We’re both fully aware that this column, over the past few weeks, has basically turned into the Bill Stone Fan Club but before you start, following him hasn’t done us any harm, banking a fair few points along the way. So, if a wheel ain’t broken, and all that…

His DASHING STONE tried six furlongs for the first time at Lingfield on his latest start and he coped well with it, beaten just half a length after making most and rallying gamely once headed. That was back in mid-August, but he’s run to form after having had a little break before, and back at Yarmouth, a track he goes well at, with two wins and two places to show for his seven runs here, there’s no reason he can’t go well again. Conditions won’t be a problem either, he has winning form on good to soft and has run to form on soft, and that booking of Kieran Shoemark is no bad thing either. Plenty of ticks in boxes regarding his chance.
