"If you ever suggest this horse again, I’ll come round your house and knock you out!"

As I often mention, working with David Massey is always a pleasure, and never a chore, and the occasional threats of physical violence merely act to sharpen my senses, so I’m very lucky, really.

The horse in question on this occasion is VINCE L'AMOUR, who I convinced David to back once before with sub-optimal results (possibly in the 3-y-o Dash at Epsom), resulting in the above ultimatum. Well, I've left it a while but when I asked him to look at this race, he spotted the name and said some things that can’t be repeated in a respectable publication, but I managed to talk him round.

Vince l’Amour (surely named after Paul Nicholas’s character from the 1980s sitcom Just Good Friends) doesn’t win often but the key to him is that he needs 5f on good or softer ground and his lifetime record under such conditions reads 531206273810366762329186828100692, improving to 1228812 in Class 5 handicaps with the unplaced runs coming either right at the start of the turf season or right at the end.

He was beaten a short head in this race last year having gone clear a furlong out and he’s able to race off the same mark after a couple of poor runs on fast ground which he seems to dislike these days. He was beaten just half a length on good ground at Thirsk earlier in the summer, and this will be his first run on good to soft since a fine second at Musselburgh in the spring.

16:15 Yarmouth - Goffs Two Million Handicap Series 1m6f

It might need to keep drying out, but Moon Angel is going to be suited by this 1¼m trip much more than the ten furlongs she’s been kept to this season.

We have only seen her twice this year, suggesting she might have had training issues, but she is lightly raced for her age and still open to improvement. A winner over this trip at Newmarket last year, she's certainly one of the more interesting runners on today's card.

16:50 Southwell - Follow @attheraces on X Handicap 6f

WILLOLARUPI has only ever raced in Class 6 company the once before today, and that resulted in a C&D win here back in 2024 off the same mark as today's.

We have only seen him twice this calendar year, and he shaped nicely enough last time to think he was on the way back to form. It’s also of some note he won third time up last year and it all points to a bet today.
