Pick 7: Win £50,000 with the free-to-play game

Our resident tipster Man On The Spot previews day three of Chester's May meeting, which makes up the £50,000 Pick 7.

1350 Crabbie's Earl Grosvenor Handicap

Hillbilly Boy won three times last year, including this race, but is 13lb higher today and both the runner-up, Gabrial's Kaka, and fourth-placed Sound Advice re-oppose on better terms. Rene Mathis returned to winning ways in a conditions race at Thirsk and can race off the same mark here while Ice Slice scored over track and trip last season and is only 2lb higher. Lat Hawill disappointed in the Thirsk Hunt Cup last week but EL HAYEM (NAP) wasn’t beaten far despite finishing only sixth in the Newbury Spring Cup and Sir Michael Stoute’s charge gets the vote now from a decent draw. Calder Prince has slid down the weights but has had less luck with the draw and Call Out Loud was due to run here yesterday.

1425 Homeserve Dee Stakes

The more exposed horses set the standard with Bay Of Poets placed behind Cracksman in the Derby Trial at Epsom recently but both Apex King and Al Hamdany were well beaten in the Fielden at Newmarket last month. Having trained three of last five winners, Aidan O’Brien runs Cliffs Of Moher, currently one of the leading fancies for this year’s Derby. He landed a maiden at Leopardstown in October when easily beating stablemate and subsequent Listed winner Orderofthegarter. But a chance is taken on the Frankel colt and Derby hopeful MIRAGE DANCER, who won on his racecourse debut at Doncaster last year and runs here rather than in next week’s Dante. Majeste was well beaten in Listed company on his comeback but is still preferred to the remainder, including Fujaira Bridge.

1500 Sustainable Group (UK) Ltd Handicap

Rich And Famous made every yard when scoring at Doncaster a fortnight ago but drops back to the minimum trip for the first time. Rosabelle and Simmie ended last year with Listed wins at this course and Chantilly respectively but Partitia beat the former over 6f here in August and should be sharper for a recent comeback. Ryan Moore partnered the latter last time but takes over the reins on TOMILY today and Richard Hannon's colt looks to have decent claims having been placed at the All-Weather Championships last month. Castleacre was placed in Listed company over 7f last year but never figured in a handicap on her reappearance.

1535 Boodles Diamond Ormonde Stakes

Last year’s Chester Vase winner Us Army Ranger failed to improve on his second in the Derby and was a beaten favourite on his reappearance at Naas. He finished just behind MIDTERM in the Champion Stakes at Ascot in October and the latter should have come on for last month’s comeback in the John Porter at Newbury - he'll appreciate this longer trip so gets the nod. Red Verdon has not raced since runner-up in the Group 1 Grand Prix De Paris last summer but is not out of this on that form while Western Hymn picked up a Listed race at Kempton in November but had finished behind Duretto in the St Simon at Newbury before that. Diamonds Pour Moi was beaten only a length in last year’s Cheshire Oaks and won a Listed event in France subsequently so could go well on her return.

1605 TMT Group Maiden Fillies' Stakes

Desert Rain has gone close in both starts so far and steps up in distance after a neck defeat at Doncaster. GYMNASTE moves in the opposite direction having finished ahead of a subsequent winner when second over a mile at Newcastle in November and the Gosden filly gets the vote to open her account in this. Highland Pass should be winning this year judged on her good effort in a conditions race at Newmarket last term while Tom Dascombe’s Cheerfilly represents a yard that have won this twice in the last three years.

1635 LDF Conditions Stakes

Double Up was without a win last year and finished behind Caspian Prince at Beverley in September. The latter also beat Duke Of Firenze when winning at Musselburgh later in the season but is drawn high today. Encore d'Or could also have a better draw having been placed behind Kimberella in the All-Weather Championship Sprint last time so JUDICIAL is preferred. Julie Camacho’s charge still won a shade cosily in this grade at Ripon recently, despite Joe Doyle dropping his whip. Canny Kool was headed in the closing stages over 6f here in August and has a shout on that form if allowed his own way in front.

1705 DW Sports Apprentice Handicap

Warp Factor was third over a shorter trip at Ayr on Tuesday and can figure off the same mark but ARCHIPPOS is preferred. The latter scored at Doncaster on his reappearance and most of a 6lb rise is negated by David Egan’s allowance. Croquembouche ran well for second at Windsor recently and is another to consider while Modernism is preferred to Gabrial's Star over today’s trip. Subcontinent notched up a hat-trick for Godolphin in 2015 and has had a recent outing over hurdles under his belt for new connections.
