15:43 Nottingham - 9 Pound Racedays At Nottingham Racecourse Handicap
There is a lopsided look to this race with the front two in the market taking out a big percentage and that creates each-way value with the one form offering four places.
The one of interest from that angle is WEST BYFLEET, who makes his handicap debut for Jack Channon after a break. Backing Channon’s runners after 60+ days off and on handicap bow are both profitable angles and while the West Ilsley trainer has gone through a lean spell in the last month, there are signs that things are on the upturn, with Crest of Fire just touched off in the Cambridgeshire.
West Byfleet is bred to prove best at a mile and further and showed easily his best form when a close second to Ciarrai Abu in a Goodwood maiden over that trip on his second start. The winner has since landed handicaps at Ascot (beating Crest of Fire a nose) and back at Goodwood’s Glorious meeting, looking a Patter horse when winning the Kincem Handicap.
West Byfleet has been below that form in two subsequent starts but has been campaigned with handicaps in mind and looks sure to improve in this sphere. The extended mile will suit and while he might be more a horse for next year, he appeals at 20/1-plus.
16:50 Nottingham - Construction Day 14th October Handicap
It’s been a real battle for TRAFALGER (not even remotely sorry) to get his head in front this season but he looks to be coming to the boil after four runs for new yard Ben Case, and after some unusual generosity from the handicapper after his latest start at Bath, he looks ready to break his duck.
Beaten a neck by Macarone at Bath, he gave it his all off the front and battled on willingly once headed, the application of cheekpieces and a tongue tie seemingly helping his cause, and it’s pleasing to see the headgear retained today. The winner followed up at Ffos Las at the weekend to give the form a solid look for the level, and the assessor has left Trafalger alone after Bath, so he does now start to look nicely handicapped.
He might face pace pressure from Ingleby Archie on the front but unlike the selection, recent runs have suggested that Archie might have had enough for the time being.
Trafalger would have made more appeal in a Class 6 contest but his morning odds make up for that and he could be hard to pass if getting early dominance.
