Our in-form daily duo Rory Delargy and David Massey provide their thoughts on today's racing.
Racing betting tips: Monday October 12
1pt win Royal Duke in the 15:17 Musselburgh at 13/2 (General) – min 6/1
1pt win Goomah in the 17:00 Newcastle at 9/2 (General) – min 4/1
15:17 Musselburgh – Class 6 (0-65) Handicap 5f1y
A fairly open handicap, but one in which ROYAL DUKE makes a fair degree of appeal after a few luckless efforts. He’s been buffeted around on recent starts, but has run well despite that, and has made the frame in competitive events here and at Hamilton since winning at Carlisle in August, where he had Never Dark behind in third.
A C&D winner off a much higher mark last season, he did spend a while in the doldrums, but has been in good form of late and is clearly handicapped to win again when getting a clear run at things. He's well drawn on paper here, but will need the gaps to appear given his come-from-behind tactics; he’s best when able to come late off a strong pace, a set-up that looks likely here with Never Dark and Lucius Aurelius likely to force a strong pace from the outset.
17:00 Newcastle – Class 5 (0-70) Handicap 1m5y
There were two of intertest here, with GOOMAH and Sailor’s Return both catching the eye in similar races last time, and while we fear the latter, it’s John Butler’s Goomah who edges the vote after running a race full of promise on stable debut at Kempton.
Previously with Natalia Lupini, Goomah was one of a trio representing Butler in a 1m fillies’ handicap at Kempton last month, and she finished best of all from a modest position to finish third behind her stablemates there, with the trainer dominating the contest.
Butler is a trainer worth following on the all-weather, with 44 winners from 188 runners this season representing his best-ever haul and those backing all of them at Betfair SP would have produced a profit of £939.00 since the start of January for those investing £10 a time.
Goomah looked liked she was being prepared for something else the way she shaped under a change of tactics at Kempton and she never came under maximum pressure on her first run for 11 weeks. If she comes on at all from that outing, she should take some stopping.
