3:28 Ludlow

Whilst there are far more likely winners, there’s no way that I can let GERARD MENTOR pass me by at a tempting price.

He tends to come to hand second/third run back after a break, and there was just about enough on his reappearance at Taunton last month after five months off to suggest he’ll come on plenty for it. That was after wind surgery too, and the fact his usual visor - which is back on today - had been swapped for less severe headgear rather suggests it was little more than an outing to see if all was well.

He’s now back on the same mark as when a head second to Cawthorne Cracker at Exeter last October, and conditions simply can’t be quick enough for him, so here’s hoping the thunderstorms due later miss Ludlow and it stays on the quicker side at Ludlow.

Some bookmakers are offering four places on the race but we like the bigger price three places for the purposes of the bet.

4:03 Ludlow

MUSIQUE DE FEE did the column a good turn when scoring over C&D last time out and I’m struggling to find a reason why she won’t go well again and go close to following up, as I was quite impressed with her attitude that day, digging deep after the last to get on top late.

This is just the sort of ride that Sean Bowen does so well with, as the more he asks of her the more she looks like she’ll find, and a 4lb rise looks more than fair for that success.

4:38 Ludlow

There are a couple of interest to me here.

KAPAMAZOV hasn’t gone on to hit the heights I thought he might after an eyecatching effort at Huntingdon at the turn of the year but it’s still early days and this 2m5½f trip ought to suit on pedigree. It’s the first time he’ll have encountered good ground and the key is getting him to settle, which he didn’t do last time out. I’m sure there’s a win in him, it’s just the predicting when that’s the tricky part.

NO WORRIES is arguably of more interest today, as he comes back from a 168-day break and whilst his general record coming back from an absence is good, for all a fair proportion of it is in Jersey, he won here on quick ground after a very similar break over fences back in 2022.

He never repeated that initial chase effort and I think he fell out of love with fences pretty quickly, so I’m happy to forgive his comeback effort of last year, which was poor. Back over hurdles and on a low mark for a yard going well.

Both have the potential to win this and equally to blow out, so rather than back one of them each-way, I’d rather have them both running for us win-only.
