14:43 Hexham – Maiden Hurdle 2m

Most won't look past the warm favourite in this maiden, but by far the most interesting runner for the future is the 5-year-old Teofimo who returns from absence for a shrewd yard having had wind surgery.

Teofimo showed plenty of ability for Jim Bolger on the Flat, his best effort a close second to the smart handicapper Highland Bling in a Fairyhouse maiden, but his tendency to pull hard stopped him building on that. He again took a strong hold in juvenile hurdles, but still caught the eye when sixth to Charlus in a Naas. He often wore a tongue tie for Bolger, hinting at a breathing issue, and he was apt to find little in latter races, to back that notion up.

Switched to Adam Nicol, he raced without his usual tongue tie for his current connections, showing that he retained ability but finding little in a couple of novice hurdles here and at Perth. Since then, Teofimo has been given a breathing operation and a break and we think that the combination is likely to bring him back to the promise of his early runs. Nicol doesn’t go in for wind surgery on an ad-hoc basis and his results with the few horses who undergo such a procedure are impressive, as outlined below.

Just seven horses from the Nicol stable have had wind surgery in the last two years, and three of those ran in the colours of Molly and Paul Willis. I went back a little further, and found that the owners had five horses over the last four years that have returned to jumps racing after a breathing op, and the results are impressive, with three of those horses winning, and both Feach Amach and National Question going on to win three times each since the procedure. Feach Amach and National Question also came to Nicol via Jim Bolger, and it’s probably no coincidence that Bolger’s horses don’t have their breathing tinkered with while at Coolcullen. There is a link between the owners and Bolger through jockey Kieran Buckley, who rode for them when with Nigel Hawke before relocating to Ireland. Parish Star is another who has won twice for connections and like Feach Amach, he first went to Nigel Hawke before getting wind surgery and has reaped the rewards since a move to Nicol.

The way these horses have been sourced and the potential improvement to be gleaned from them is clearly no fluke, and I’d be very interested on looking at any other horses leaving Coolcullen for Seahouses.
