Expecting improvement from handicap debutants isn’t always a rewarding pursuit, but we would both be surprised if Ian Duncan’s COYLTON KING didn’t step up markedly on what he’s shown to date over hurdles now given a mark by the assessor. Beaten just over four lengths in a bumper here in January, he’s been well held in three runs over hurdles, showing more despite being unsuited by the drop to 2m here last time.
Backing all of Ian Duncan’s handicap debutants over jumps to a £10 stake at SP would put you over £400 in front over the last five years, and he does especially well at this, his local track. Duncan also trained Coylton’s King’s dam, Lochnell, to win five times over hurdles and fences at Ayr, and like her, the son of Jack Hobbs seems certain to progress of a test of stamina. This race looks competitive enough on paper, but a mark of 89 looks workable for Coylton King, and he merits a bet in the circumstances.
