Racing betting tips: Thursday October 8
1pt win One Night Thunder in 16:05 Ayr at 9/2 (General) - min 4/1
1pt win Upton's Mighty Oak in 16:48 Market Rasen at 7/2 (Unibet) - min 3/1
15:30 Ayr - Tennent’s Lager Handicap 6f
First-time blinkers helped Eye Of Dubai to win the Bronze Cup here last month and we fancied him to follow up at Ripon, another track where he has a good record, but the quicker ground there counted against him and for all he gave it a go, finding trouble in the latter stages as he was starting to make ground, he couldn’t get involved to any great degree.
Back on slower ground today, which is going to suit, he has every chance of bouncing straight back and for all he got put up 5lb for the Bronze Cup win, that still leaves him 4lb where he was at the start of the turf season, and his mark is still more than workable.
16:05 Ayr - San Miguel Handicap 7f
A tricky little contest, with a couple of the main protagonists, Cisco Disco and Empirestateofmind, probably both in need of another furlong, for all the ground will ride testing. It’s been a long time since Cisco Disco, a ready winner over a mile here last time, raced at 7f and Empirestateofmind has just had the one try at the trip this year, at Wetherby in the summer, and was well beaten.
ONE NIGHT THUNDER might be the answer. He’d dropped a hint at Carlisle two starts back that his turn might not be far away and so it proved, Gemma Tutty’s 6yo running out a ready winner over this C&D on heavy ground. Put up 5lb for that, he’s still 7lb lower than the start of the year and there’s more than enough headroom in that mark for him to go in again before the handicapper starts to get a grip.
16:38 Ayr - Outcider Handicap 1m
Not too many of these have winning or placed form on heavy ground, and it’s easy enough to narrow it down to a handful pretty quickly. Easy cases can be made for Penelope’s Sister and Blufferonthebus, but if there’s a time to see if Ey Up Its Jazz has the ability to win a race of this nature, today might be the day to chance it.
His form this season isn’t great, but the two runs on the all-weather aren’t really his bag, but the Doncaster run at the start of the year hinted he still retained some ability. Disappointing again in May, we didn’t see him out until three weeks ago when he clearly needed the run here, and you’d like to think he’ll come on a bit for that.
He has winning form over a mile here, albeit on quicker ground, but he handles heavy and the yard did have one first past the post here last week, only to lose it in the stewards room thereafter.
16:48 Market Rasen - Book Boxing Day At The Races Handicap Hurdle 2m4f
UPTON'S MIGHTY OAK got a mention on sister column Away From The Spotlight on Monday and she looks a fair price in a weak race this morning, so we'll make her a bet. She showed ability in three starts over hurdles last year her fourth behind better-fancied stablemate The Procrastinator particularly eyecatching, and she's going to improve for a step up in trip on her handicap debut today. A couple of entries were made for her next Tuesday yesterday, which suggests there's a plan in the offing too, Dr Newland keen to take advantage of what he thinks is a fair opening mark.
