Lightning Spear won his first Group One in the Qatar Sussex Stakes - recap the day two blog from Glorious Goodwood.
1618: On that bombshell - AND WHAT A BOMBSHELL - today's live blog comes to a close.
It's a memorable day for those loyal Lightning Spear followers and an especially poignant one for his trainer David Simock, who recently lost his father.
RESULT - Goodwood 4.10
1st Feel Glorious (125/1)
2nd Alhakmah (4/1 favourite)
3rd Welcoming (5/1)
1608: The fillies' maiden up next and Alhakmah and Desert Lantern share market favouritism.
Either Yourtimeisnow or Alhakmah to win is a Sky Bet Price Boost, from 2/1 to 9/4.
1550: The fears over Without Parole and Goodwood proved to be justified, with the previously unbeaten three-year-old under the pump from a long way out. He didn't perform to his best, surely, but he'll definitely be moving up in distance from now.
Expert Eye has run a belter to be second back up in distance, while David O'Meara's excellent run of form continues with Lord Glitters flying home for third.
1545: Hard to imagine there's a more deserving Group One winner out there - Lightning Spear finally opens his account at the highest level.
At the 16th time of asking in top-class company, David Simcock's seven-year-old has got the job done.
RESULT - Goodwood 3.35 Qatar Sussex Stakes
1st Lightning Spear (9/1)
2nd Expert Eye (4/1)
3rd Lord Glitters (10/1)

1532: They're getting down to the start and all seems to have taken the prelims well. George Baker makes the point on RUK that the nimble Gustav Klimt - half a length behind Without Parole at the Royal meeting - should be suited by this track and Ryan Moore may look to make the running. Is there still a slight doubt over the well-being of some of the O'Brien runners? It's just enough to put me off him right now.
1525: The favourite looks exceptionally well ahead of the day's feature.

My only fear with the Gosden three-year-old, and it is a small fear, is that Goodwood may just be sharp enough for him. He's a son of Frankel and while he's unbeaten, he can look like more of a grinder than a speedster at times and the course here plays more to the strengths of those with lots of natural speed.
There's also a question over the tactics with Andrea Atzeni possibly in line to make his own running on Without Parole. Time will tell and it's a fascinating heat.
Beat The Bank for me and throwing in his old foe Lord Glitters, along with Andre Fabre's unexposed French challenger Orbaan, is a tempting combination forecast in case the three-year-olds all fall a bit short of the mark.
Can French raider ORBAAN spring a shock?

His pilot Silvestre De Sousa couldn’t be in better form! pic.twitter.com/i29JulD8qp
1512: It's the moment of truth next for Without Parole, who continues to ease in the betting and is now a top-price 15/8 with Sky Bet.
Fellow three-year-old Expert Eyew is also quite weak, with my own fancy Beat The Bank supported into a best of 11/2. He's a course winner and still looks on the up based on his defeat of Lord Glitters at Ascot. The second could also be over-priced here considering he's available at 16/1. The third home that day was Suedois, who performed so well in defeat over seven furlongs here yesterday.
"The Sussex was always our main aim..." Like this quote from Andrew Balding.

1505: Trainer Richard Spencer already has a bit of a smart reputation with two-year-olds following Rajasinghe's victory in the Coventry Stakes last year, and now he has another very nice prospect on his hands in Rumble Inthejungle.
The 5/1 winner was at the head of affairs two furlongs out and just kept pouring it on for Tom Queally. Obviously best known as Frankel's jockey, Queally looks to be riding with genuine confidence again and hopefully he can kick on for the remainder of the season.
Queally told Racing UK: "The feel he gives you there's no reason to think he won't keep improving into his three-year-old campaign. He has so much speed.
"Richard's doing an amazing job and all his horses are running well. He's getting them healthy and well.
"I couldn't pull him up there and that was the case the last day. He's a colt with a lot of class."
RESULT - Goodwood 3.00
1st Rumble Inthejungle (5/1)
2nd Life Of Riley (16/1)
3rd Soldier's Call (6/4 favourite)
He travelled strongly throughout the race and quickened clear in good style. #QGF

1440: Winning trainer William Knight: "He'll be a lovely horse next year. We were in here on such a nice weight and Jimmy Quinn has given him a brilliant ride.
"We've minded the horse and as long as we keep minding him we'll have a lovely horse next year."
1435: Cattermole strikes! After selecting three winners yesterday, Mike Cattermole is back in the groove, following up Lil Rockerfeller in the first with a 20/1 sizzler... Soto Sizzler. Some selection.
He's got two more to come and you can read his preview right here.
RESULT - Goodwood 2.25
1st Soto Sizzler (20/1)
2nd Corgi (5/2 favourite)
3rd Making Miracles (4/1)
4th Proschema (16/1)

1418: There's an Extra Place up for grabs with Sky Bet in the next at Goodwood - the Move Over To Matchbook Handicap over 1m4f.
Corgi tops the market at 11/4 following his fine Ascot effort, with Making Miracles and Infrastructure just behind him in the betting.
Bartholomeu Dias has been gelded since he last raced at Goodwood when he tried to take a bite at another rival. He looks to have taken the preliminaries quite well today, all things considered.
Well-fancied to take the next handicap is the progressive looking INFRASTRUCTURE for @MMeadeRacing.

1410: News from elsewhere at Goodwood today and Mark Johnston has confirmed that yesterday's impressive Vintage Stakes winner has been supplemented for the National Stakes at the Curragh.
He said: "There were entries this morning for the National Stakes which he wasn't in.
"There was a second entry stage so we had a great debate whether to enter this morning as it was £8,000 to supplement this morning or it was £35,000 to supplement at the five-day stage. I was overruled by Charlie and Deirdre (Johnston) so he is in the National Stakes.
"Basically, we are thinking two options between now and the end of the season are the National and the Dewhurst (Newmarket), so that's the plan at the moment."

1400: Gosh, that was easy. De Sousa dictates and Lil Rockerfeller blows his rivals away!
He's in for a steep rise in the ratings if they're planning on sticking to the Flat but there are plenty of non-handicap options in this sphere. We'll await the trainer reaction to see where he might go next.
Part-owner Andrew Smith seems to have enjoyed himself watching that race...

RESULT - 1.50 Goodwood
1st Lil Rockerfeller (11/4 favourite)
2nd Altaayil (28/1)
3rd Imphal (7/1)
4th Cool Sky (12/1)

1345: They're heading down to the two and a half mile start (not far to go in fairness) ahead of the opener and Lil Rockerfeller has opened up at 100/30. Imphal is solid enough at 8/1 and last year's winner Cool Sky is 12/1. Dominating is the one for money at bigger prices and he's 16/1 across the board having been 25/1.
Remember, it's Money Back as a free bet if your selection is second or third with Sky Bet.
1340: Time for a look at some big-race trends, with today's article focusing on the Molecomb Stakes, with nine of the past 10 winners being sent off at 8/1 or shorter.
As you can see from the graphic, being beaten at Royal Ascot isn't the end of the world when it comes to this race and Vintage Brut could be worth forgiving his poor run there considering he'd been through the sales earlier in the week.
Back from a break with the ground not quite so lively, he looks an interesting player. Furthermore, he's predictably the pick of Racing UK's wine tipster...
1335: Richard Fahey only has three runners today but his column is worth another look as he's obviously quite hopeful over the chances of the so far unbeaten Aljady in the seven furlong handicap that concludes the card. Click on the link below for his views and keep an eye out for a guide to the rest of his Goodwood team later in the week.
1328: Amazingly, if you Google 'British desserts', the top results are Angel Delight, custard (just custard?), Bakewell tart, Eton mess, scones and Battenberg cake. They know the score at Goodwood.

1320: "I hope the other jockeys aren't watching as nobody really knows what's going to happen tactically..."
Excellent stuff, as ever, from Oisin Murphy.

Including his thoughts on his ride on Lightning Spear pic.twitter.com/obPhrm2Msy
1315: Never mind me, who do the big guns fancy today?
Simon Holt is siding with Beat The Bank in the Sussex and Sir Mark Prescott's Piedita in the first, along with Making Miracles in the 10-furlong handicap.
Mike Cattermole is a Without Parole fan and also has Soto Sizzler among his selections.
And Oli Bell's Yankee is as follows:
1.50 Piedita
2.25 Corgi
3.00 Street Parade
3.35 Expert Eye
A crestfallen Ben Linfoot has been left with just one Value Bet selection following that crushing non-runner news. His reduced preview contains a small each-way stab on Great Sound for Richard Hughes in the first.
1300: And how on Earth are we going to deal with this 10-furlong handicap now certainty of the day Baileys Excelerate has been withdrawn due to lameness?
His stablemates Making Miracles and Lynwood Gold have tons of experience between them and Polish is the dark one lurking nearer the bottom of the weights for Roger Charlton.
But Drill may be worth excusing his disappointing run when favourite at Salisbury two starts back. He scooted in at Newmarket last time and although that was a relatively beatable five-runner field, he's not been overly punished with a 5lb hike given his dominance. I like the booking of Luke Morris as he definitely won't shirk the issue if there's any jostling for position early on.
1255: Let's focus on the first race briefly. It's a marathon handicap race with a flag start, (no stalls) and there's a 9/4 favourite.
Given Lil Rockerfeller has become a multiple Graded winner over hurdles since his last Flat run back in May 2015, he's clearly lobbed in as he's able to compete from an old Flat mark of 82. He's got Silvestre De Sousa for company and he's wearing blinkers for just the second time (ran well first time over hurdles) so there's plenty of upside, barring the price.
The Newbury form of Sky Bet Ebor favourite Stratum gets a test as the second and third - namely Kloud Gate and Coeur De Lion - reoppose one another, while last year's winner of this race Cool Sky is back for more off just a 5lb higher mark.
Dominating tries a new trip for Mark Johnston and Gary Moore has an interesting second string in Altaayil, but maybe fellow course winner Imphal could still have a bit more to offer in handicaps after proving seriously progressive already. Hayley Turner takes over from Tyler Saunders in the plate.
To make things a little sweeter, it's Money Back with Sky Bet if your selection finishes second or third - and you can check out all the live odds here.
1250: Shall we get the view from America on the Sussex Stakes? Here's a familiar face with a gently persuasive case for the favourite in the Group One contest. There's #WinandYoureIN status here for the Breeders' Cup Mile, don't forget. Something which has to come into calculations given Without Parole's connections.

1245: Some significant non-runners today, including the Value Bet selection Baileys Excelerate in the 1m4f handicap.
Non-runners:
2.25 - Move Over To Matchbook Handicap
5. DESERT WIND (IRE) (Self Certificate, Bad Scope)
6. BAILEYS EXCELERATE (FR) (Self Certificate, Lame)
5.55 - Goodwood Racehorse Owners Group Handicap
18. DARK PROFIT (IRE) (Self Certificate, Stiff)
1230: Here's some vital information which may or may not have tripped me up somewhat in yesterday's blog...
Stalls Position:
Straight Course - Stands' Side.
Round Course - 1m3f and 1m4f Outside,
Rest - Inside
1220: 'Who are these stars of which you speak, Matt?'
Well, Without Parole's owner/breeder John Gunther suggested he got more of a kick out of this horse winning at Royal Ascot than watching his US star Justify win the Triple Crown earlier in the summer and John Gosden's three-year-old is set to clash with fellow Ascot winner Expert Eye, who took everyone’s breath away with his victory as a two-year-old here last year.
Aside from the feature Qatar Sussex Stakes, today's card does perhaps lack a little sparkle but Aljady has an unbeaten record to protect in the lucky last, the hugely popular Lil Rockerfeller returns to the Flat in a fascinating opener featuring a flag start, and who knows what’s lurking in the fillies’ maiden – a race won last year by Mark Johnston’s Threading. He saddles Desert Lantern this time around.
Soldier's Call is the warm favourite in the Group Three Molecomb Stakes and there has to be a chance we're yet to see the best of this son of Showcasing.

1200: Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to our Qatar Goodwood Festival coverage, where it’s Good ground for day two of the Glorious meeting (from Good, Good to Soft in places in the straight following a dry night).
A glance at the weather forecast suggests it’s going to get pretty warm again from tomorrow onwards but there’s only a bit of light cloud around today and temperatures are already approaching the 20C mark.
So leave the brolly by the front door, head down to the Downs and get set for day two and the chance to see some genuine equine stars.
