1:30 Chester

The opening race of the Chester May meeting looks very competitive, with all the obvious pace coming from the low stalls. It’s possible that will mean that those berthed low will dominate, but my reading of the race is that likely leader Old Chums may have to work harder than ideal to gain that spot and while he is respected after overcoming a wide draw at Kempton last time, he could be setting this up for STASH THE CASH, who impressed when winning at Catterick (5f, heavy) on his return and looks the type who will benefit from the extra furlong here given how strong he was in the final stages.

The form of that Catterick contest has been boosted by third-placed Vince L’Amour winning twice since and I’m hoping the pair can score again to give Tim Easterby a double on the card. The going will be very different to Catterick but I believe Stash The Cash is much improved since his juvenile days rather than that he needs testing ground.

The other that could benefit from a late pace collapse is WINGED MESSENGER, who ran well on his reappearance at Thirsk, has experience of the track and has a very similar run style to Stash The Cash. It’s all about a bit of luck in the run with these types but he has as good a chance as any late on.

Both of us can see the merit of the other’s selections and essentially we can take 3-1 one of the pair winning, which makes some appeal. We’ll play two small win singles in the hope one of us gets the luck in running.

2:05 Chester

SERAPHIM ANGEL was beaten on debut at Newmarket and meets several winners here on equal terms, but I thought she achieved as much as any of the winners in the race when finishing a 2¼-length fourth of 13 to It Ain't Two at the Craven meeting. She took the eye in the paddock there and given connections tend to race with this meeting in mind, she has likely had this race as her main target.

The winner of that race was trained by Hugo Palmer and he also has an interesting newcomer here in the shape of Arabian Cobra. This well-bred colt has an entry in the Super Sprint at Newbury in the summer and has presumably been showing all the right signs at home for another stable geared up specifically for this fixture.

2:35 Chester

Some disagreement here….

Rory’s already mentioned Vince L’Amour, who was drawn on the wrong side of the track when third to stablemate Stash The Cash at Catterick on his return, and he has improved to win well at Ripon and back at Catterick in two subsequent runs.

This represents a rise in class for the son of Invincible Army, and he’ll be racing on faster ground than he has to date, but he thinks he will cope well with a firmer surface and the blazing early speed he’s shown on his last two starts will stand him in good stead here.

I’m less convinced, and with some early pace potential up his inside I feel he might be on the back foot early here. The well-backed Due For Luck was my idea of the winner, so this is a race we’ll have to sit out and see who’s got the bragging rights after.

3:05 Chester

She’s twice got loose before intended outings and had to be withdrawn, so it’s clear that there is a hint of temperament about Beeley, but she has run very well despite showing her inexperience in two starts to date and is bred to improve for a stiffer test of stamina than the 1¼m she was second to Siyola at Sandown last time.

This extra 300 yards will be in her favour and if she consents to go into the stalls, she is capable of outrunning her odds. However, it's no longer an each-way race after three runners and nearly all firms down to two places.

4:45 Chester

G'DAAY is probably better known as an all-weather horse these days but his record on turf is solid - of the 16 starts he’s had, he’s won two and hit the frame a further six. Epsom is his favourite track but he handled Chester on his only start here, that when third on unfavoured soft ground last August, and from the outside draw to boot.

A perfectly acceptable fourth on his comeback at Chelmsford last month after a winter break, he loves to front-run and stall 4 gives him every chance of popping out and making all under Sean Levey.
