12:45 Newcastle – A/W NH Flat Race 2m56y

All-weather bumpers can be lucrative betting events if viewed form a pedigree angle, as the sires responsible for producing the bulk of turf winners in this sphere tend to have a poor all-weather record, and that is the case here as a rule. Many of the sires represented here are unprofitable on artificial surfaces, but Crystal Ocean, sire of PURE OCEAN, has a positive record from an admittedly smallish sample. According to Proform, Crystal Ocean’s progeny have a record of two wins and four places from 11 runners on such a surface, beating 70% of their rivals in the process. To contrast, Milan and Dragon Dancer’s offspring are 0-37 combined.

Pure Ocean represents Lambourn handler Richard Bandey, having his first runner at Newcastle, but he’s in form, with three winners in January from a dozen runners and it’s possible that he’s coming all the way to Newcastle to avail of the surface for his mare, who is out of a half-sister to Champion Hurdle winner Binocular and shaped well at huge odds when midfield on debut at Plumpton. That ensure fitness at least and Pure Ocean looks sure to improve having shown signs of greenness on the preliminaries at Plumpton.

I C U In My Dreams looks the most obvious danger with Donald McCain the only other trainer to tick the “in form” box here and he’s also by a sire with a respectable record of producing all-weather winners in Jukebox Jury. She stayed on late when runner-up on debut at Catterick, but appeals as one who will make more of an impact when her stamina is tested, and that is far from certain here.

1:50 Newcastle – Class 4 (0-120) Handicap Chase 2m87y

Pony Soprano drops in class after a creditable third to Escapeandevade at Haydock, and that form is working out quite well, but it’s definitely a concern that he was readily brushed aside after leading into the straight and he does look rather paceless. This stiffer track will help, and Dan Skelton has found him the best opportunity he could, but I still have slight reservations, for all a big run would be no surprise.

Spadestep has been runner-up on both chase starts, although should have won last time at Doncaster when getting to the front on the run-in only to idle and get caught close home. Cheekpieces are now added to the tongue tie he wore there, and that will aid his concentration, while his second to Jordans Cross at Aintree is the best piece of form on show and has been well advertised since, with the winner unlucky not to have won all three of his subsequent starts and looking good when taking the Timeform Novices’ Handicap Chase at Cheltenham on Saturday. There is little doubt that Spadestep is well treated on that form, and he has only himself to beat here.
