Racing betting tips: Saturday October 10
1pt e.w Flash Man in the 14:10 Chepstow at 14/1 (1/5 1,2,3,4 General, min 10/1)
0.5pts e.w Rightsotom in the 16:02 Chepstow at 40/1 (1,2,3,4,5 General, min 40/1)
0.5pts e.w High Point in the 16:32 York at 50/1 (1,2,3,4 Sky Bet, Spreadex, min 33/1)
1pt win Pickersgill in the 18:30 Southwell at 7/2 (General, take no lower)
16:32 York - Sky Bet Extra Places Handicap 1m6f
HIGH POINT has the look of one that’s been saved for an end-of-season crack at something. Given he stays this far, two runs over a mile in August look like no more than a couple of runs to help get a few pounds off; it was better at Ayr last time, upped to 13f, where he tried making all, got took on, and paid the price late. All the same, he still only got beaten 5¼ lengths and it was a step back in the right direction. Acts on soft, is a winner over this trip, and given his wins have come off marks of 76, 76, 76, 77 and 79, today’s mark of 76 puts him right in that particular ballpark again.
18:30 Southwell - 6f Handicap
PICKERSGILL is back on her last winning mark (and that win came in a better race than this) and will enjoy these conditions much more than the heavy and soft ground she’s encountered twice lately. She didn’t do much at Musselburgh between those starts either; a hood did nothing for her and was quickly discarded, but her form reads 1220, and the 0 is easily excused as she reared in the stalls. With no pace in the race, I’d expect Darragh Keenan to let her roll along up front.
14:10 Chepstow - 2m Paul Ferguson Horses To Follow 4yo Handicap Hurdle
Plenty you can give a chance to, but FLASH MAN appeals based on his recent fourth on the Flat at Epsom in what is popularly known as the Jump Jockeys Derby. The fact he went off at 100/1 tells you little was expected, but he outran his odds to finish a close fourth, showing plenty of good late work after finding a bit of trouble in running.
That run was pretty much on a par with his French form for Henri-Alex Pantall and would make him look well treated off a mark of 112 here. He’s already a winner over hurdles, having beaten Loriko back in April, but his recent run suggests he could do better. Kevin Brogan - on board at Epsom - keeps the ride too, which can only be a good thing.
16:02 Chepstow - 2m Tote Silver Trophy Handicap Hurdle
I’m finding this a very difficult handicap to fathom, but a couple at high prices make some appeal for different reasons.
It was one shot and done for Washington last year, winning on this card for the first time up (looked very well, according to my notes on the day), and after that his season quickly fell apart, pretty much out the back in five handicaps. That means he’s 4lb lower than last year, so he’s well handicapped, and the bigger question is the trip, with all his winning form at two miles. He's tried this trip twice and pulled up, but one was over fences and the other he wore a hood he resented, so neither run really represents whether he'll stay. The first time out is the time to catch him, though, and I won't rule him out simply on the trip.
RIGHTSOTOM was a promising novice hurdler for Tom Mullins and Joe Tizzard wasted little time getting him over a fence. Still, it was a disappointing novice season for him; he made mistakes and ended the season winless. The move back over hurdles is interesting, as he looks fairly well-treated and both trip and ground should suit, and Joe Tizzard had a decent day yesterday, with two placed at big odds and a well-backed winner in the last. He seems to have his horses in good order, and the massive odds about Rightsotom are worth a second look.
