Our in-form daily duo Rory Delargy and David Massey provide their thoughts on today's racing action.
Racing betting tips: Saturday October 24
1pt win Uncle Bert in the 14:55 Cheltenham at 6/1 (Ladbrokes, Betway, min 5/1)
1pt win It Just Takes Time in the 16:30 Doncaster at 11/1 (General)
1pt win Prosperitas in the 17:05 Doncaster at 7/2 (General, take no lower)
14:55 Cheltenham - William Hill Best Odds Guaranteed Handicap Chase 3m1f
UNCLE BERT looks the one to be with, with first time up probably the time to catch him. A winner on reappearance at Aintree last year, he remains fairly unexposed at staying trips (has a win at 3m over hurdles to his name) and after losing his form in the second half of last year, starts off this season just 3lb higher than the Aintree win. Some rain before racetime looks very likely and that’ll be to his benefit as well.
15:55 Doncaster - William Hill Best Odds Guaranteed Handicap 1m2f
Normally, if it’s October and heavy ground then you gravitate towards Mustazeed without question, as he almost always comes good in the autumn when the mud is flying. However, we have to wonder whether he still fancies it anymore; two refusals in his last four starts are pretty big warning signs, but on the other hand he’s had a change of scenery, leaving Harry Eustace and joining Terry Kent, and maybe that’ll sweeten the old boy up a bit.
His form at Doncaster in soft/heavy ground reads 12200, so conditions are ideal, and if his new yard have found the key to him, he could go well here. Chances are you’ll get the auld justice refund if he refuses again, so what’s to lose at 33s and bigger, eh?
16:30 Doncaster - Spooky Spectacular Fireworks At Doncaster Racecourse Handicap 7f
Hard to look past IT JUST TAKES TIME at the prices here. He bounced back to form in a first-time visor at Catterick last week, winning with a bit in hand, and gets to race in 0-80 company again thanks to the way entries were made for this before he was re-handicapped on Tuesday.
Not only is he back in form, but he’s got winning form on soft and heavy ground, and at Doncaster too, Olivia Tubb having won on him in an apprentices handicap here back in 2024. Expect to see him front rank up the middle from the outset.
17:05 Doncaster - Spooky Spectacular Fireworks At Doncaster Racecourse Handicap 7f
PROSPERITAS did a lot wrong at Kempton a month ago, his first start since May, but he still finished an eyecatching fourth and you wondered whether something like this might be on the cards, given a liking for soft and heavy ground. He beat On The River in heavy ground here at the back end of last season, first-time headgear given as the reason for the return to form but there’s little doubt a return to a soft surface also helped, both of his wins coming on heavy ground. More rain the better for him, then, and if Mustazeed plays ball earlier in the day, Terry Kent has chances of a late double on the card.
