Mensur Suljovic tipped for Premier League Darts selection after winning Champions League of Darts

PDC Director and Sky Sports Darts commentator Rod Harrington believes Mensur Suljovic stands a very good chance of earning a Premier League Darts invite for 2018 - and hopes he takes up the opportunity should it come his way.

The Serbian-born Austrian defied pre-tournament odds of 40/1 to land the prestigious Champions League of Darts title on Sunday night, as he defeated world number two Gary Anderson for the second time of the weekend.

Suljovic won all three of his group games - including a 10-3 thrashing of Anderson and a 10-8 victory over world number three Peter Wright - before claiming a dramatic 11-9 triumph over Raymond van Barneveld in the semi-finals, where he nailed a 160 checkout to seal his place in just his second major televised final.

The 45-year-old, who was thrashed by MVG in his first at the 2016 European Championship, was again underdog to repel the Scotsman's revenge mission but despite averaging under 90 in a scrappy contest, he edged it 11-9 to scoop the £100,000 top prize.

The Gentle's popularity with darts fans soared across the weekend thanks to his superb performances and personality - which was witnessed by the mass BBC TV audience - and there have unsurprisingly been further calls for him to be called into next year's Premier League Darts line-up.

Darts legend Harrington, who is a PDC Director and Sky Sports commentator, has branded Suljovic the most improved player on the circuit and feels the door could well have opened for him to join the lucrative eight-man event, which runs every Thursday night from February through to May.

He told Sky Sports Darts: "He was the only player in the tournament not to lose a game and that was the best thing that could have happened for the PDC and the game - Mensur winning. It sends out a message to everybody that if you play well the benefits are there.

"Mensur has proved that if you play well then you're going to get the benefits. He was being realistic when he said 'I have no chance of winning this tournament' during a TV interview, but it didn't affect his performance. He's being realistic, but when he gets up on the stage he believes he can win and he proved it at crucial times.

"I hope he takes up invites which he is sure to get, possibly for the Premier League. The PDC board have proved they're going to mix it up like they've done with the World Series and they're sure to do it with the Premier League next year. He will be a welcome addition along with the likes of Daryl Gurney and Gerwyn Price."

On the world number seven's progress, Harrington added: "He probably is the most improved player over the past two to three years on the big stage.

"He came into the PDC system about three years ago and because his throw was so unorthodox and he was so slow at times, people used to think he was winning games because of those tactics, but it was just the way he played.

"They tend to overlook how skillful he is and how much bottle he has. He doesn't very often miss chances when given them, he's very good on his doubles and checkouts. He may not be one of the power scorers in the game but all you have to do is throw great legs at crucial times and you can win matches - that's exactly what he did all weekend."

The next big Sky Sports-televised major is the World Grand Prix, which takes place at Dublin's Citywest Hotel from October 1-7. You can click here for the full draw and tournament schedule.
