Michael van Gerwen was favourite to win the Players Championship Finals for the fifth time - and fourth in a row - but despite reaching the final he suffered more major heartache this year at the hands of Daryl Gurney.

The 2018 Players Championship Finals will be broadcast live on lTV4 and through the PDC's worldwide broadcast partners.

Michael van Gerwen will start as favourite to win the title for a fifth year in a row - but for the first time in goodness knows how many years, he doesn't start a tournament odds-on!

In fact, he's not even evens! He's odds-against at 5/4 with Sky Bet, with Gary Anderson next in the running 4/1 having defeated him in the Grand Slam of Darts semi-finals at the weekend.

The Flying Scotsman went on to lose the final to Gerwyn Price, who can be backed at 25/1 to make it back-to-back televised titles.

Players Championship Finals: Qualification & Format

Qualification for the Players Championship Finals is based on performances across the series of 22 Players Championship tournaments which have been held during 2018, with Ian White topping the final Order of Merit thanks to his consistent performances, including two titles.

He finished ahead of Gary Anderson, Michael van Gerwen and Peter Wright while Adrian Lewis came in fifth, with world champion Rob Cross in sixth.

Every player's 'seeding' in the draw represents their finishing position in the Order of Merit, with Ian White facing 64th seed Scott Taylor in the opening round.

Each round will be played over the following legs:

• First Round - Best of 11 legs
• Second Round - Best of 11 legs
• Third Round - Best of 19 legs
• Quarter-Finals - Best of 19 legs
• Semi-Finals - Best of 21 legs
• Final - Best of 21 legs

There will be no tie-break in any match.
