Wimbledon betting tips: Andy Schooler's day 3 preview

Our Andy Schooler brings you his betting suggestions for day three of Wimbledon 2017.

Bet of the day

More than 40.5 games in Lucas Pouille v Jerzy Janowicz at 10/11

Janowicz made the semi-finals here in 2013 with his booming serve working superbly. After injury problems, it’s not the weapon it once was but there are signs that the Pole is on his way back to something approaching his best form – he beat Grigor Dimitrov in Stuttgart and then saw off Denis Shapovalov in round one here.

Pouille won in Stuttgart recently but has had plenty of battles already in this grasscourt season – six of his seven matches have seen him drop at least a set and five of the seven have featured a tie-break. To help the theory that this one will go long, four of Janowicz’s five matches on the surface this year have seen a breaker played.

With the pair’s only previous meeting finishing 7-6 7-6 in Pouille’s favour (there were two breaks on a slower surface than this in St Petersburg), you can see why I think this can go beyond 40.5 games. Yes, Janowicz will need at least a set but Pouille is not ruthless and with serve expected to hold sway for long periods, I’m backing the overs.

Outside chance

Tie-break to be played in Maria Sakkari v Krystina Pliskova at 11/4

I’m also heading to the tie-break market for Wednesday’s long shot. This is a match featuring two decent servers and they’ve also never played before wich means there’s every chance the opening part of the match will see the players simply getting used to the other’s delivery.

Sakkari has had a tie-break in four of her last five matches, while the equivalent figure for Pliskova is four of the last seven.

All of which makes the 11/4 about another being played here worth a dabble.

For those looking for straight match upsets, 6/1 shot Florian Mayer has always tested Marin CIlic – their head to head stands at 2-2 with each of Cilic’s wins coming in a final set. In the womens draw, Camila Giorgi loves the grass and could prey on Madison Keys, who is still feeling her way back after wrist surgery, while Donna Vekic is 3/1 to beat Johanna Konta less than a month after doing so in Nottingham.

Wednesday treble

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Daniil Medvedev & Rafael Nadal all to win in straight sets at 3.95/1

Yesterday’s treble on straight-sets wins came in with three in the ladies’ draw doing the business for us. I’m always a little more wary of putting a multiple of this ilk together when it comes to men’s matches with best-of-five – nine sets are needed in a treble, as opposed to six and players know one lost set is not disastrous. Still, I think these three look a class apart from their respective rivals.

Tsonga started well on Monday and should be too good for Simone Bolelli, a player who has taken only five games from Tsonga in each of their previous two meetings. The Frenchman is a natural on this surface, not something which can be said of Bolelli.

Nadal also started impressively and holds a similarly strong head-to-head record against Donald Young – he’s defeated his fellow left-hander easily on both previous occasions and should break regularly enough to easy to another victory.

Finally Daniil Medvedev can back up his first-round upset of Stan Wawrinka against the limited Ruben Bemelmans, whose last win over a top-100 ranked player on grass was in 2013. Medvedev is flying right now after impressive runs at both Queen’s and Eastbourne and the youngster with a big future can complete a tasty treble.
