US Open champion Naomi Osaka returned from illness to reach the second round of the China Open in Beijing on Monday.
Osaka, who was forced to withdraw from last week's Wuhan Open, hit back in style with a 6-4 6-3 win over Kazakh qualifier Zarina Diyas.
Osaka was joined in round two by second seed Caroline Wozniacki, who broke Swiss opponent Belinda Bencic six times on her way to a convincing 6-2 6-3 victory.
Former Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza cruised past Ekaterina Makarova 6-0 6-4 while seventh seed Karolina Pliskova had too much for Australian veteran Sam Stosur, winning 6-4 6-4.
There was delight for the home fans as Chinese world number 45 Shuai Zhang beat Belgium's Elise Mertens 6-1 3-6 6-3, while Carla Suarez Navarro and Petra Martic were among the other first-round winners.
In second-round action, Donna Vekic beat Tunisian qualifier Ons Jabeur 7-6 (5) 6-4, Julia Goerges advanced when opponent Laura Tsurenko was forced to retire at 6-4 4-6 2-2, and Anastasija Sevastova scored a default win over American Madison Keys.
