After a 13/5 winner on Friday, our tennis man Andy Schooler serves up his best bets for day seven of the French Open.
Marton Fucsovics v Thiago Monteiro
Monteiro has progressed to round three without losing a set but his run looks likely to end on Saturday.
Fucsovics has already beaten fourth seed Daniil Medvedev and brushed aside a decent claycourter in Albert Ramos-Vinolas.
The latter may well have been good preparation for this contest too, given he is also a left-handed opponent like Monteiro.
Unlike some, Fucsovics has a decent enough record against lefties. Against this particular one, he leads 1-0 having beaten the Brazilian on the clay of Munich last season.
Even in these slow conditions, Fucsovics’ ability to hit hard and flat should take some time away from Monteiro and he doesn’t like to be rushed.
I’m surprised Fucsovics isn’t shorter than his 4/9 quotes but the way to go looks to be to back him giving up a 3.5-game start.
The Hungarian, who made the fourth round of the Australian Open, has won plenty of matches this year and even on Monteiro’s favourite surface, he should prove too good by a wide-enough margin.
Fiona Ferro v Patricia Maria Tig
Ferro made the long-list for my outright preview at a massive price but what put me off was the fact that she’s missed several recent tournaments due to a rib injury.
Prior to that, she won the WTA’s first post-lockdown event in Palermo. Without the injury cloud, that would have been strong clay form coming in here.
She has, so far, put those injury concerns to one side and duly took out much-fancied seed Elena Rybakina in the last round.
To be fair, Tig also made a WTA final in the run-up to Roland Garros, albeit it in a weaker field in Istanbul, and she’s also yet to drop a set – again against lesser players than Ferro has faced.
Buoyed by her win over Rybakina, Ferro looks capable of continuing her run and looks worth backing for a straight-sets win at 23/20.
