Nick Kyrgios has replaced Milos Raonic on the World team for next month's inaugural Laver Cup.
The Australian steps in to fill the shoes of the team's top-ranked player, who has a wrist problem which this week also forced his withdrawal from the US Open.
Raonic's absence leaves the six-man World team without any top-10 players for their clash with Europe which will take place on a hardcourt in Prague from September 22-24.
The event, created by a consortium which includes Roger Federer's management company TEAM8, has been dubbed the Ryder Cup of tennis due to its format similarity to golf's premier team competition.
However, with Europe having five top-10 players in their side, including Federer and Rafael Nadal, it is in danger of becoming a one-sided affair.
Despite Raonic's withdrawal, Sky Bet still have the Europeans at 1/3 with Team World the 5/2 underdogs.
Kyrgios, who had originally qualified for the team but didn't take up his place, said he was delighted to play in an event named after his famous compatriot, who won 12 Grand Slam titles during his career.
"As an Australian, it’s a privilege to compete at an event that honours Rod Laver," said the recent Cincinnati runner-up. "We grew up learning that he’s a hugely important part of our history."
He added: "I love to draw on the energy that comes from being a part of a team and I can’t wait for the Laver Cup because I’ll be competing with guys who are also my friends."
Team captain John McEnroe said Kyrgios, who has often been a controversial character in his time on the tour, would "shake things up" in Prague.
"In Nick, you have an exciting young player who clearly thrives on a big stage and against the world’s best players," said McEnroe, who will be going head-to-head again against old rival Bjorn Borg, who will lead the European side.
"He’s as bold as he is talented and I truly expect him to shake things up."
