Wimbledon 2017 ladies' singles draw: Johanna Konta in same part of draw as Petra Kvitova & Simona Halep

British hope Johanna Konta has been handed a testing draw for Wimbledon.

The British number one, seeking to become the first home winner of the ladies' singles since Virginia Wade in 1977, was placed on course for a last-16 meeting with Petra Kvitova, the bookies' favourite, when the draw was made on Friday morning at the All England Club.

She could then have to face second seed Simona Halep in the quarter-finals.

Konta will start her campaign against Hsieh Su-Wei, the Taiwanese player who knocked her out in the first round of the recent French Open.

A potential second-round foe, Donna Vekic, is another to have have beaten Konta in the last few weeks. Vekic won their Aegon Open final on the grass of Nottingham.

It is all dependent upon Konta recovering from a spine injury though.

She sustained it in a nasty fall duing her quarter-final win over world number one Angelique Kerber at the Aegon International on Thursday and on Friday morning withdrew from her scheduled semi-final match.

Konta is hoping to return to the court on Sunday.

A statement from Konta's representative said: "We are seeking medical advice and monitoring the situation closely. Johanna is hoping to return to practice on Sunday and will assess the situation further at that point."

The other quarter-final in the bottom half of the draw will be Dominika Cibulkova v Elina Svitolina, if the seedings play out.

In the top half, Kerber, last year's beaten finalist, is in the same quarter as Svetlana Kuznetsova. The second quarter features Karolina Pliskova and Caroline Wozniacki.

That is potentially the toughest part of the draw with the big-hitting Coco Vandeweghe and Kiki Mladenovic also in it, as well as grasscourt specialist Tsvetana Pironkova.

Kerber, whose position at the top of the rankings will be under threat at the tournament, will open against qualifier Irina Falconi on Centre Court at 1300 BST on Tuesday but could have to beat 2015 runner-up Garbine Muguruza at the fourth-round stage if she is to get to the latter stages.

Five-time champion Venus Williams is in Cibulkova's section - the pair could meet in the last 16. Venus, a semi-finalist 12 months ago, will open against Elise Mertens.

Her sister Serena, last year's winner, will be absent this time around. The 35-year-old is expecting her first child but has vowed to return to the tour next season.

Meanwhile, French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko will meet Svitolina in the last 16 if both progress through the opening week. Svitolina has one of the toughest first-round draws, meeting Birmingham runner-up Ashleigh Barty in her opener.

Kvitova will play Johanna Larsson first up but dangerous floater Victoria Azarenka avoided the seeds. The former world number one, who recently returned to the tour as a mother, will play rising American star Cici Bellis in round one.

She could, however, face a seed in round two - namely Elena Vesnina, who made the semis last year.

Of the other Britons, Heather Watson, going well in Eastbourne this week, meets Belgian Maryna Zanevska, the world number 117.

National number two Naomi Broady will play Irina-Camelia Begu, ranked 69th, in the first round.

Laura Robson faces world number 96 Beatriz Haddad Maia and could then play Halep in round two, with fellow wild card Katie Boulter up against American Christina McHale.

McHale is ranked 59th but retired injured during this week's tournament in Eastbourne.
