Fabio Fognini became the first Italian to win an ATP Masters 1000 title with a straight-sets victory over Dusan Lajovic in Monte Carlo on Sunday.
The 31-year-old followed up his surprise win against Rafael Nadal with a 6-3 6-4 success on the red clay at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters.
Fognini had two breaks of serve to Lajovic's one in either set as he rounded off a memorable week in the principality, which also included victories against top-10 seeds Alexander Zverev and Borna Coric.
"I'm really, really happy. Nothing to say," Fognini told atptour.com. "I was preparing for the match as best I can because he has my ex-coach and I knew it was going to be really tough, a lot of running.
"It's an incredible achievement. I'm really, really happy."
Fognini made several errors early on and lost his serve in the third game. However, Lajovic failed to capitalise as he dropped his in the very next game.
Fognini won three games in a row and held off the Serbian to seal the opening set with a stunning backhand winner down the line.
Lajovic dropped serve again in the opening game of the second set before he mounted a brief fightback but he was overwhelmed by Fognini's tactical nous as the Italian went 4-2 up.
He ended the contest on his second match point and Fognini will rise to a career-high ranking of 12 when the latest ATP rankings are published on Monday.
