Pablo Cuevas win third successive Brasil Open title

Pablo Cuevas claimed his third successive Brasil Open title after beating Albert Ramos-Vinolas in Sao Paulo.

Ramos-Vinolas had led 7-6 3-3 on Sunday when heavy rain forced the players off and took the final into a second day.

Further wet weather delayed proceedings on Monday as, although the players initially made it out on to court an hour later than their intended start at noon local time, they were taken off again before they could restart.

When play finally resumed more than six hours after its scheduled start time Cuevas immediately broke Ramos-Vinolas to edge ahead 4-3 in the second set, which he closed out 6-4 to take the match into a decider.

The 31-year-old Cuevas added another service break early in the third set to move 3-2 ahead and although Spaniard Ramos-Vinolas saved two match points on his own serve to make it 5-4, the defending champion served out - winning match point after serving underarm.

“It was very different from previous years," said Cuevas after his latest success.

"I wasn't playing really well in the start... I had to turn a few matches around, in the quarter-finals too, and the match stopped yesterday when I was one set down. But I was strong enough to turn it around and win a third title here."

On his unusual tactic on match point, Cuevas explained: “I was making a lot of double faults. When I prepared to hit that second serve, there was a big chance that I would hit a double fault. So I thought about the possibility of the underarm serve and that it was something I probably shouldn't do. But I also should not do another double fault. So I just stopped thinking and I did it.”
